And lest we forget - That missed short putt in the 2005 WGC-Amex playoff against Tiger cost John a chance at a 3-year PGA Tour exemption thru 2008.

Speaking of Long John Daly and the WGC-Amex tournament in 05, my wife and i had the priviledge of attending on Saturday and following Daly and Tiger around the course.

This tournament was probably John's swan song, he did say that if he didn't win it he would quit the tour and go play in Europe, and he was devastated in the loss.

But the fact is that this had to be one of the greatest tournaments ever as Tiger and Daly slugged it out over the last two days, and i have never seen anyone hit the driver like Daly did over those days, simply incredible.

It was golf at it's most thrilling with drives carrying over 300yds in the air over high trees on doglegs, driving par 4's and sticking it close like they were hitting 3 irons. All out aggressive power golf with precision results.

I'll never forget that tournament and it may be that this was Daly at his final moment of glory and what show he put on! That's the way i'll remember him.

My opening post in this thread appears not only here, but at several other web-locations. And out of all of the responses I've read so far, only one has expressed his view that my "role model" line was a bit harsh.

Yes, I concede that it may be a harsh appraisal. But it is not meant to be mean-spirited or un-sympathetic.

Odd as this may sound, it seems almost as if John Daly has chosen to be something that he does NOT need to be, and would not readily believe that he could exist on this earth any other way.

And that is sad indeed.

loser?? I would like to see how someone would respond to the pressure of playing golf to make a living.. People talk allot, I would do this or that, but in the end its all cheap talk.. Daly has problems true but so does everyone else.. Tell me have you ever know someone who drinks or gambles or has a problem with either one or maybe both?? People should get off there high horse. He is a man with a problem (or more) that needs help sorting things out..

I can't help but feel for the guy. Sure he screws up. But, he has a heart of gold and has never consciously done harm to anyone(as far As I know).

He grew up in an unstructured environment and has had that 'party monkey' on his back all his life, yet he has managed to become rich beyond his dreams and a cherished friend to thousands of fans.

The addiction that's seldom mantioned is sex - that is what has proven to be his biggest problem and leads him to so many fruitless relationships.

I wish him well.

I would not call him a loser. The article cites back and hip problems. Plus, his wife went to Federal prison for unrelated matters. That's tough on anyone and a relationship. I think he wanted this marriage to work and play great golf this year. It just wasn't possible.

is a loser. Plenty of guys cut on it on Tour without making jackasses of themselves (see: everyone else on Tour), so that argument doesn't hold up for me. He brings it on himself. I remember attending the Buick Invitational where he won over Lukey-D, and everyday the press were touting him as "the common man's golfer" or as being so "in touch" with the common golfers. BS. Most golfers (Tour and otherwise) go to their job everyday and come home to their family at night without the excessive alcohol abuse and temper-tantrums Daly constantly exhibits on the course. He's not impressive. He's not a role model. He's not even a good golfer anymore. Do I have sympathy for him because he has a problem with alcohol? Absolutely. But my question is: why doesn't he go away for a while, get some professional help, then rise again and become a dominant player? He has it in him. We've all seen it. The reason he doesn't: he's a bum.

I think people will always be torn on this issue. It generally runs along the lines of people who are close to an addict and those that are not. Daly is an addict. It doesn't excuse what he has done, but it sure explains a lot. It's very easy to say go take some time off and get better. Even if he quits gambling, drinking, sleeping arround, etc. he will still be an addict.

Often times it's somthing deeper than the addiction. Many people use their drug of choice to cover up a bigger problem. My father is an alcoholic that quit drinking and took up smoking pot. It cost him his wife and family for a long time. He had to choose between going to rehab or moving out. He left the next day. He distanced himself from my mom, my brother, our kids and me. He missed birthday parties, Christmas and most other family functions. About four years ago he tried to kill himself by cutting both wrists. He lived and they put him on medication for depression. Since then he is a different person. He doesn't drink or use drugs anymore. He has moved in with my mother again. He comes to parties and holliday functions.

I am a fan of Daly's. I probably like him because of his problems. I will always pull a little harder for him because for him to do it he not only has to overcome the course and the field of world class players, but also personal demons and self doubt. Nobody is perfect. Daly is far from that. I just think people pull for him because they know someone like him or maybe they are someone like him.

Seeing him in tears when he won the play off at The Buick Open should make anyone feel for the guy.
