Watching the Chevron yesterday I was impressed how much Tiger's footwork has improved. No longer is he quickly onto his right toes and creasing his golf shoe. It's a bit transient - he's had better footwork in the past as well - but often in the past it's just been with shorter shots. Here it is with a full 3W, and even dating to 2008 it's an improvement.

Have a look.

good analysis Erik. Can you explain some of the benefits of banking your back foot through impact compared to going on your toes more. To my understanding it allows you to come more inside with your swing and more lateral, right? or what has it done for Tiger, obviously it hasnt decreased his power since hes gained more power since changing

I have a hunch, and it's that you see the Tiger on his toes as "jumping" from the ground forces thread. Remember, jumping and extension are how you use the ground for power... so let me ask you this: if you sag or flex your right knee in towards the ball, is that extending and jumping?

I think you'll get the right answer there. If my hunch is correct, that should set things straight for you a bit. Proper footwork banks the rear foot inward. I like to feel that my right foot is being dragged along like my whole right leg is dead. My hips push forward, the foot banks, the heel is PULLED off the ground if at all, not POPPED off the ground. BTW, here's an awesome picture of Freddie from an analysis elsewhere on the site:

I've been working on this too (along with the jumping) in slow motion, but man is it tough for me to accomplish at full speed. I think one of the reasons I have to address the ball off the toe with my driver is because of my awful footwork shifting my weight towards the ball.

Thanks Erik, its one of those positions Ive been working on and need to understand it more, especially with the ground forces aspect. Keeping my right heel down just felt so different when I started doing it that I wasnt sure if it was limiting my jumping but I understand it more now. The dragging the right leg or dead feeling you explained should help me with my swing more.

I have to do the same. I knew it was obviously me shifting toward the ball in the swing, but i didnt understand why. I have been trying to balance more in my finish as i can fall over toward the ball when i follow through. Thanks for the tip

I could easily be wrong though. I was speculating. We'll just to wait for confirmation from an instructor if this could be a reason for that.

The correct footwork is going to follow, or at least be made easier by, the correct hip and right leg movement. I think most could concentrate on footwork all day long and wouldn't accomplish much because of how poor their lateral motion is.

It's just a matter of feel for people. Some people get better hip and leg action by concentrating on their footwork. A good percentage, actually.
