My equipment is DIALED in. Except I want to play ONE ball consistently this coming season. I have a somewhat slow swing speed 91mph...Why is it I've ALWAYS gotten better distance with 3 piece balls vs. 2 piece (distance) balls? I LOVE the Black Max, Ben Hogan Tour Deep, Callaway HX, and One Black. But from what I've gathered, I don't have a high enough swing speed to take advantage of these Tour balls. Yet, out on the course - I hit the shit out of these, while the Big Berthas, Mojos, Red Maxs, and Noodles, seem to come up 10 - 20 yards shorter. What is going on here? I am aware of the "straightening" properties of a third layer in a ball. But even the 3-piece Wilson PX3, Nike Ignite, Callaway HX-Hot, Bridgestone E6, seem to come up shorter. The Tour balls seem to spring off faster...I can't afford $45 a box. The Black Max is nice at $30, and so is the Hogan Tour Deep. Any thought on these balls? Am I missing something? Have any of you gotten on a launch monitor with several ball choices and found one to have the perfect launch conditions? Thanks in advance...

I have just a slightly faster swingspeed than you do. I was told that I could not generate enough clubhead speed to maximize the ability of the pro V1x. In the real world I have discovered that you can't go by swingspeed alone. I have my best rounds when I am using the v1x. So much for lack of swingspeed, huh?

I was in Golfsmith today checking out the new stuff and on my way out the door, I saw a deal on 2 boxes of Precept Laddie extreme balls for $19.95. I have been looking for a winter ball so I bought them and went to the course for a quick 18. I could not believe how well these work and talk about soft for a 2 piece ball. I did manage to gain a few yards and scored about the same as usual. Now i'm wondering how these would do in warmer temps. I may go back and pick up another 10 2dozen packs just in case.

Don't be too concerned with what your suppose to play, just play with what works for you.

Swing speed is only part of the equation, how much spin you put on the ball, fairway firmness, wind etc. All have some effect. At 91 mph if you hit the center of the clubface you could easily acheive a 130-135 mph ball speed. Someone who doesn't hit the center of the club face with a 95 mph swing speed might only acheive 125 mph ball speed. Add in the other factors I mentioned and it gets way to complicated. Generally ball flight gives you a clue. If you tend to hit the ball low then a higher spin 3 piece ball might actually be longer for you. Try some of the 2 piece model balls which say contol and distance instead of the maximum distance models, they usually are a little softer and spin a little more.
