Interesting scramble format

My company holds a 2 person scramble for our customers every year. As per usual, there were some that didn't show up so I got to play the full 18. The course had some interesting rules for us and was curious if anyone had played this way before. The course has 4 tees; ladies front and back (red), and mens front and back (white and blue). The rules for the men were this: everyone started on the whites, if you make par, you continue on the whites. If you make birdie or better, the next hole you go back to the blues. If you make bogey or worse, the next hole you move up to the reds. The idea being to help you if you have a bad hole, and challenge you more if you have a good hole. I am still wondering if this was fun or not, three days later. Has anyone ever played like this before? What did you think? I think it worked pretty well for a 2 person, 4 person it probably wouldn't have done much. It was kind of nice that if you made bogey you got to move up and have a chance to get it back, but if you made birdie, it just made the next hole a little tougher. We got in a pattern after making a bogey that the next was a short par 5. Driver and wedge for a birdie, then a longe par 4. Made another bogey after a bad tee shot. Move up on the next, easy birdie. Fianlly we broke the pattern on an average par 3. I think it favors the better players since they would be able to maintain birdies, even from the back tees. My partner was not good at all, so I was hoping for pars most of the day. But it was nice that if we made bogey, we got to move up. I think the intent was to keep everyone somewhat equal, but looking at the final scores, it would appear that the better players just separated themselves a bit more than usual.

I would be a bit worried that people would birding all the  short par 3/4s and get stuck playing the par 5s from the long distance. For beginners I feel it is a lot easier to par/birdie the short holes as they have occasional good swings just not 3 in a row. Heck you would might be better to bogey the par3 to take a 50 yards off the following par 5.

I have played this format both 2 and 4 man teams.  Often in these kind of events many of the participants don't have handicaps and don't play golf very much.  This format is a good way to sort of "level the playing field" when the skill levels vary a lot of strokes.  I thought it was fun and made you feel like you might have a chance to win.

Fun format, I've played a few scrambles with these rules.  It hurts when you team strings together a few holes and then ends up at the tips on a very long par 4.

I would birdie everything you can of course, screw the next tee box.  If it's a long par 5, and you have added 30 yards to the hole by moving to the back tees (30 yards... if that) then who cares?  In a 2 man scramble?  You're hitting 9 instead of wedge into the green?  Lay up properly and you're still hitting wedge.

You might not have many chances to get home in two, but if the first guy lays up well, then the second guy reaches for a big stick and takes a swipe at it.
