I'm guessing a few of the rest of you are a bit like me: you really, really like the equipment and gear and shoes and "stuff" that accompanies a sport.

And though running is one of the "purest" sports in terms of not "needing" equipment, I've already gotten:

  • Three pair of running shoes (Brooks Pure Flow, Brooks Pure Connect, Saucony Kinvara 2)
  • A GPS watch with a HRM and a foot pod
  • A few pair of shorts.
  • A few shirts.
  • A few pair of pants.
  • A few jackets.
  • A pair of gloves.
  • A hat.
  • Memberships (most free, pro options available) to some websites.
  • A Running Club membership.
  • Music to listen to while I run.
  • An ice pack and some wrap to hold it on.

Are you a running gear-head to or are you a whole lot more "minimalist?"

I guess I should be happy I haven't bought a treadmill yet. I hope I never do.

Socks are some of the most important gear you will ever wear. All it takes is one half marathon with the wrong pair and you will know what I am talking about. I have the Garmin Forerunner 205 and my wife has the so much smaller 405.  Love the features as it allows you to get as anal as you want too. I am so trying not to turn this into golf by keeping it simple...for now!

My other find is sunglasses from a company called Boston Bills. They are a small outfit with great customer service with an affordable product.

Yeah, I have the 610, too. I could have been clearer about that earlier. Haven't taken it out yet. Too busy with the iPod. I'll use it when I'm running without walking, I think.

The 610 is great.  It's much better and smaller than the ForeRunner 305 I replaced.  If you have the heart strap with it you'll find it provides great feedback on your heart rate during the run so you can maximize your training sessions.  In addition to helping me train smarter, I have found that I can actually predict when I'm over training or getting sick just from where my heart rate is at different points in the run.

I just read a review on all the different training watches and 610 was the most accurate for road running followed closely behind by the 305.  The Polar is more accurate for treadmill runs using the footpod, but I like the Garmin software and ANT much better than Polar.

  • 2 months later...

Just got some new shoes today.  They are the New Balance 1080V2.  I got fitted at the local running store.  Odd thing is I've been fitted before and stability shoe was what I got.  She said that seemed odd and recommended a neutral shoe.  She said if anythng I underpronate.

Other gear, amphipod water belt, cotton nothing, dry fit everything.  During my runs I drink accelerade and for long ones force down gu every hour.
