I know stat tracking has had many threads, but I haven't been able to find exactly what I'm looking for.  I saw a reference to the Golf Like a Tour Pro app where the user noted you can keep very detailed stats like:

club used

distance

chips

putts

distance to hole on the green

penaties

sand shots

Fairways hit R, L, C, or missed

Visiting the Golf Like a Tour Pro site it was very unclear what the capabilities were.  They sell it as Streelman listing all the types of shots and giving little tips and videos about that type of shot.  They don't mention whether you could use the app on the course and actually record your stats as you go.

I currently just use a free app (android) called Handicap, where you can enter rounds with just score, putts, fairways, GIR, and penalties.  I keep track of those stats by hand on the card and enter them afterwards (though you can use it during play to score, I've never done it).  I'd like to up the detail in my stat gathering and tracking.  I'd especially like to be able to use an app to score on the course (yes I know this is probably illegal now, since my phone can access illegal info, though I don't), where as I'm walking to my next shot I can record, for tee shots, what club I used and whether I hit the fairway or went right or left, and for approach shots, what club I used, distance to the pin, whether I hit the green, and if I hit the green, how far I am from the hole.  Also of course penalties, sand shots, whether I got U/D on a green side shot.

I'm not a GPS or laser user, and I'd almost prefer the app just to be a scorecard app cause my phone's battery probably won't last the whole round using the GPS constantly.  I'm fine with an app where you have to do something like enter in courses yourself, going hole by hole and entering in yardage and par or whatever.  The only functionality I really want is to be able to fire up the app at the start of the round, and on a given hole be able to add shots as I go, recording the shot type and all the info I mentioned above.  I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for something like this.  Anyone know of anything like this?

I use GolfShot (http://golfshot.com/home) on my Android phone to keep track of my score as I play. I use the free app, not the one that includes the GPS features. After a hole, you input your score, putts, tee club, whether you hit/missed fairway and where if you missed, and how many sand and/or penalty shots you had. It's incredibly easy to do in this app and I normally can do it before we even leave the hole, or on the ride to the next hole. The app has the information for the course you're playing beforehand, so from that information it can figure out GIR, fairway accuracy, scrambling, etc. It may not quite do everything you're after, but it's a great app and service for free. I say service because it uploads everything to their website where you can view it in aggregate later. Here's my profile for an example: http://golfshot.com/members/0519060490/rounds Interestingly enough, I played today with a random person and as we were on the approach to 18, he asked what I was using to score the round. I mentioned the app and what it does and he kind of said it was cool, mostly brushed it off. Well as we finished our putts and were walking off I immediately saw my score, GIR, and everything else and even compared it with past rounds. Once he saw that, and went back to his paper/pencil to add his score up, he was more interested. :) Here's a sample output that you can see in the app, on the website, and it's also emailed to you as soon as you finish a round: http://cdn.thesandtrap.com/4/46/640x456px-LL-46e42c65_Screen20Shot202012-03-0820at207.06.5620PM.png

I just got the Golfer Stats Pro app for my phone.  It is easy to use and a quick scorecard, so your not holding up the group.  All I enter is Par, Score, Putts, Penalties, Fairway, and bunker.  Using that I get over 60 different stats on driving, approach shots, putting and other stats.  My favorite stat is Top 3 worst/best holes for the round.  It helped with course strategy the next time I played it.  You can also break down the stats by viewing them overall, by the course you played (helps when playing the same course a lot), by round and even by year.

The app gives me every stat that I need and then some...

Thinking of getting the paid version of this. I was already ready to plunk down $30 for Scorecard 2, and this one is  a detailed GPS. Stat tracking looks great.

I also really like oobgolf.com. I haven't used the phone app. I keep all the records on the scorecard and transfer the info to the computer when I am done.

If you want stats that detailed, bring a notebook and pen to the course with you.  The 2nd thing you need is a laser because that's the only way you'll get truly accurate yardages to record in your stat-book.  GPS is not consistently accurate......

Recording fairways, greens, putts, and scrambling stats will tell you a lot..............and it's easy to do.

I use the GPS version of golfShots and love it.

You can measure your distances with gps and it keeps track of those along with a lot of other stats. You can even take pictures of the course and it will upload those under your scorecard.

There is an example of some of the stats it keeps and distances (At the bottom I only measured one shot that round)

i use oobgolf to keep track of score, fairways, playable drives, tee off club, approach shot hit/miss, and total putts.  It works great but i recommend keeping track of only a few stats at once.

oobgolf's iphone app is very well designed.  You can configure which stats you want to track to keep the entry screen compact and un cluttered.  If you make par, you just tap the score button to accept par, or hit +/- for bogie or birdie, etc.  Takes one or two taps to enter the score basically.  All of the stats have sensible GUI controls to make them very fast to enter.  It takes only a few taps to enter all my stats that I am tracking, while walking/riding to the next hole.

I track also Playable drive, fairway it(left, right, hit miss), putts, 1st putt distance, approach(left, right, long, short, hit miss), chips, up/down (yes,no), sand saves (yes, no).  Some of those I don't have to enter every hole.  The hole thing takes anywhere from 5-10 taps to enter.

From that, They generate a lot of interesting stats such as GIR, etc...

I used to use GolfShots, but ever since I got a laser I've given up on GPS, it takes too long.

One very interesting feature of the iphone app is that as you play the round, it puts a "projected score" at the top, based on how you're playing so far.

Then you can go to their website and see all kinds of cool graphs and charts for different stats over time.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
