So hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction on this.  We all hate slow play, yet we know it is inevitable.  Here is my issue yesterday.

I took off work a couple of hours early to walk nine holes before the end of the day... I love, love, love walking nine holes, it is amazing golf.  Anyways, when I got to the first tee I saw a foursome walking off the number 1 green.  I thought I would be in the clear... at least a while.  Not so much.  I start off Par, Par, Bogey on the 8,10,4 handicapped holes respectively with very little waiting. Scoring those first holes like that is unheard of for me, and I am enjoying it.  I am taking my time, enjoying the day and how well I am striking the ball.  So I get to the par 3 4th hole (which is a bit of an uphill hike) and they are on the green.  No biggie, so I thought.  I waited 10 minutes (literally) on the tee box.  The threesome behind me also came on the tee while I was waiting.  I asked them if they wanted to play together and the agreed, but they were not happy about it.

You know what happens now... I top my 7I and luckily recover for bogey.  Head over to the 5th hole and wait for another 5 minutes... and the promptly top another tee shot, followed by a slice into the green side trap.

Someone help me.  How do you guys deal with slow play and keep from getting frustrated?  I was annoyed, but I was trying to make the best of it but walking around and enjoying the scenery.  I guess my subconscious was pretty fired up.  BTW, there was no way to play through as there were two more foursomes in front of the group ahead of me.. although they were a hole ahead.

If you see a huge gap, ask to play through. If they were right up againts the group infront of them then it doesn't matter.

Some times your just going to play a slow round, deal.. As soon as you realize it takes to much energy to get angry at something you cant control, you'll play better. Lets say i'm waiting on the tee box, i'll hit chips shots around the tee box to keep busy. Or i'll just enjoy the day, think about something else.. I've been a onesome stuck behind a crap load of foresomes before, so i've gotten use to it. To me the key is, it is what it is...

Yup, That's the truth.  If you do ask to play through it helps to be polite as opposed to demanding or demeaning.  Most slow foursomes (not all) will let you through if you ask and there is an open hole in front of them.

Not sure that killing time by chipping around the tee box while you wait is legal but that's an issue for the rules forum.  I do it myself when I'm playing alone so I'm not a rules enforcer, especially when playing alone (no I don't post these "not quite by the rules" rounds).

Perfectly legal to chip on the tee box before you tee off as it is legal to putt on previous green once you have holed out.

One of my playing partners has a heck of a time when a round slows. I'm trying to help him mentally deal with it. Don't select your club or start anything that resembles a pre-shot routine until you can execute through hitting the shot. "It is what it is" would appear to be the mantra. Inevitably he'll hit a bad shot and there's his built-in excuse...he has a nice swing and can hit good shots. His problems are all in his head and slow play is one of his biggest pet peeves. That and loud players on adjacent holes. Chipping is a good idea in my book, or if nobody is coming up behind...hit a few different putts after holing out.

50% of this game is half mental.

We all struggle with slow play - i just look at it as extra strokes come tournament time

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
