different brand, different result??

Hi everyone,

I'd like to know if there can be a real difference in distance, depending on the brand/type of club and golf ball that you use.

And if so, how much can that difference be?

It seems to be rather difficult to find accurate information on the internet about this.

Honestly I think its bogus.  Sure there are different clubs out there that just feel better than others and therefor you hit them better.  But at a certain level a club is a club.

There are a few companies out there that are marketing their clubs at a bit of a different numbering than they should be because of the angle they sit at (their 5 iron is REALLY a 4 iron) and sure you hit their 5 iron farther than brand x.

Every golf ball company is going to tell you there ball gets you more distance than others (true to a point) but for most players a ball is a ball.

That said...I spent a small fortune on my clubs and only use a certain brand of balls....all because I hit them further or have more control than brand x.......

As far as brands marketing i think mobey hit the nail on the head but as far as improved technology I think there are some actual gains but most not realistic. The RBZ adds 17 yards? adds 17 yards from what? The superfast 2? When i changed from my old 975d to my current superfast I gained maybe 20 yards and ease of hitting the ball with bigger face. But I think for the most part its what fits you best and having somewhat up to date technology. If i go buy a 400 dollar driver i might gain 10 yards? and thats mostly because I would get it fitted and get the right club for me instead of one i found on craigslist.

I don't think that there is a huge difference brand to brand as long as they were made around the same time and you stay in the same category (SGI, GI, players, etc.). The bigger differences are when you upgrade from older clubs to new ones with a lot of new technology or if you change to a club that fits you better (i.e. you change to a sgi model after playing blades and you are a high hcp. player).

Golf balls? It's all hype. The same can be said for beers. Besides the measurable difference in alcohol, it's just your taste vs. my taste. And  advertising. No objective measurements in balls within a particular group, say spinnys  or rocks. You can measure how many layers in ball, now from 2 to 5 but what is the result of these layers, who can tell?

Clubs? When all irons were painted black, for a test, the pros could not tell  high priced forged from cast iron. It's in the mind.
