I recently picked up a set of Nike VRS Forged irons with Nippon 950GH HT shafts in Stiff.  Loved them on the range, high trajectory but not overly so.

Just as background, 15hcp and dropping, low of 12hcp in the past.  Driver SS on a Trackman was 108-110, 6i 89-91mph.

I've played the Nikes a few rounds, love the feel and generally hitting the ball well.  My "stock" 7i with them is 170yds.  In the past I've had about a half club on this, but trying to develop a smoother swing.  I've noticed on a couple occasions when I put a very good swing on them, I actually lose distance.  I've seen it with a 7i and 9i, ball has the ballooning trajectory, hangs in midair, then seems to drop straight down.  In the past I've played Dynalite Gold S300s and never seen this.  Do you think it's possible the Nippons are spinning too much at times?  Can't really find too much direct info comparing spin rate between True Temper and Nippon shafts.

It's not bad enough for me to swap them out, just trying to think through it.

If HT means high trajectory, I though the NS PRO 950 was high enough, and from experience (I last played those shafts 10 years or more ago) and talking with club makers, the shafts played a bit soft to flex.

So you may be on to something about too much spin and height killing distance.

The 1050 is a nice shaft, but for control, I liked the Nippon 1150 Regular - stiffer at the tip but it still gets up there in the mid to high lofted irons. I'd probably stick with a 950 if you wanted steel in a hybrid. The 1150 stiff is stout! - too much shaft for me.

good luck

Yep, High Trajectory.  It's definitely up there, but I would say it's OK in general, until the occasional "balloon" ball happens that I was referring to.

I also felt like they were a bit soft, but I am not really seeing left/right dispersion so it didn't concern me when testing them on the range.  I actually liked it, felt a nice kick on most swings.

Just a hunch at this time, may hop on a monitor but not sure anyone has that head set up with a fitting cart so not sure that I'd be able to compare something like a DG to the Nippon.

May pickup a demo 7i and throw a heavier shaft in it just to see how it does.  Love the irons otherwise.

I have these in regular flex, hard-stepped once. Just slowed my swing down for increased control. Very noticeably higher trajectory than the previous 950GH in stiff, soft-stepped once. I really like the feel and the trajectory. I wouldn't say ballooning, but getting close. If you look at Nippon's website, it is much like the schematic comparison shows.

I tested  a set of these irons about the time of chilly's original post, but the shafts were 950GH (not HT). These shafts got the ball up plenty high, so I was worried the HT version would cause ballooning. It's just something you need to test out.
