Lie angle

How much is the changed by adding 1/2" to an iron?

The lie angle is the angle between the clubhead and the shaft.  The length of the shaft doesn't have any bearing on this angle, so if you have a 64* lie on your 37" long 6-iron, when you lengthen that 6-iron to 38.5", it still has a 64* lie.

True. But adjacent irons typically vary 1/2" in length and 1* in lie angle.

 

So, in a way, you could say that extending a club by 1/2" and not adjusting the lie angle flatter, the club will effectively play 1* flatter.

Not much, at half a degree lie change, even with a wedge, your looking at less than half a yard miss left or right

Sorry - I should of course have said the longer club will play effectively more upright.

The effective lie angle gets one degree more upright for every half inch of added length, and one degree flatter for every half inch taken off.

Same thing happens when you grip down on a club. If you normally grip down one inch it's like having a club  two degrees flatter.
