About four years ago I was fitted at a demo day, the result was G10 blue dot. I hit the i10's ok but the Ping staff member suggested the G10's. With my standard clubs I am a little toe heavy and compensate without realizing it. Instead of buying the G10's ( due to the expense ), I purchased a set of Wilson Ci7's. I have now owned them for four years and in all that time I have hit each long iron crisply only a handful of times. I can hit the 9-UW fine ( my SW & LW are Titleist Forged TW wedges ),but the 8 less, 7 even less, 6 hardly and forget the 5 & 4. Feel like broken bat singles....

So, I would like to go out and get a affordable set of blue dots. Looking at the prices on ebay etc... my price range would be G10's down to G2's. Open to I10's and i5's as well.

The problem is here is that I can not try them before purchase so I would like to describe my game and let you folks help me decide.

I am a 18 handicap since the Ci7's. Prior to that my average score was mid 80's with an occasional sub 40 nine holer mixed in.

I am a strong iron hiiter, I hit down always taking a decent divot. As far as length goes:

Lob W - 85 and below

SW - 100 - 105

UW-125

PW - 140-150

9 - 150 - 155

8 - 155-16ish

7 - 165-170

6 - 180

5 - 190

4 - 200

3 - 210

I don't really work the ball heavily, maybe very slightly in some circumstances. My iron ball flight if struck correctly is straight or a slight draw.

My league starts in about 4 weeks....

In advance I appreciate all of your input !! Thanks

What about the i3+ irons? I had the i5's and the i3+ and I liked the i3+ better. I had the blade version.

I'm sort of suprised by the very little feedback I received...as a new member wondering if the other members can see this. he threads of this or that ping club are quite long, I was hoping to tap the ping groupies...

Requests like this come from new members fairly frequently. Oftentimes longer-time members get tired of answering them. Or they don't know enough about the particular clubs you're asking about to give a good answer.

Basically this.  I had written a nice long response to you, then re-read it, and realized I sounded like a total d&*k, so I thought better of it. :)

Ping makes good clubs.  Pick the ones that you like the look of the most, hit the best, and are most comfortable with the price.

What is your price range?

You know your lie (blue dot), you just need to select your shaft, i.e., steel, graphite, stiff, regular, senior, which of course is based on your swing speed among other things. If you are buying on EBay I guess you will be limited to what is available. I've always played Pings so I can't compare to other clubs. I currently play graphite shaft G15s and really like them. I believe they are much like the G10s so I don't see you going wrong with them (the G10s). I'm looking at the new G25s but can't see spending the bucks they are asking (but I said that about the G15s and bought them anyway). I think I'll wait a while and see what comes out in a couple of years.

Working the ball has nothing to do with the irons you buy. What I mean buy that is that I hear people say you can't really work the ball with a "game improvement" iron. You are always hitting a round ball with a flat surface, game improvement or blade, you can shape the ball with any iron, it just takes the proper set up and swing.

Your distance looks really good IMO. But if you achieve better ball striking with the G10s you may increase somewhat. I think what you will realize is more consistancy in your ball striking thus (hopefully) lowering your score.

You can't go wrong with Pings, again IMO. The G10s, G15s, and even the G20s are basically the same iron with slight differences. I've hit them all and they feel the same to me. I'd go for it.

Save yourself the fitting $$$ and use PING's online fitting program: http://www.ping.com/fitting/default.aspx

I have the G15s and like them alot.  I don't see any difference between them and the G20s.  The G25s are also similar, but with a narrower sole.

I've been looking at the i20s since I am seeking less sole width and since my long irons are already hybrids, I think I can handle the narrower soles in clubs 5-PW.  However, they are still expensive and I may wait until the end of the season when they drop a bit in price...

The G2 thru to G15 irons are remarkably similar in how they play. More differences in the shafts offered. I too would also look at the I3 irons especially the I3 oversize which are stupid easy to hit long and straight and very inexpensive. Some good information on ping iron shafts posted in the ebay guides to buying used ping irons if you do a search. Some of the Ping shafts play a bit soft to flex rating which might be a problem for you. I do not hit the ball as far as your distances and personally find Dynamic gold S300 shafts too stiff (but Dynamic gold R300 just right and still heavy enough for the feel I want) Ping ZZ65 for me is a bit too stiff feeling but I like both the Ping JZ in stiff and Ping Awt in Stiff which could make the latter two play a bit soft for you. The Ping TT lite in stiff too light for my swing in the short irons on the set that I tried as did the Ping AWT in regular flex. The Ping Rapture Irons are definitely worth a look. Many consider the cushin shaft inserts to be a desirable bonus when buying used pings. One thing for sure there are lots of used Ping irons in great shape out there and more coming up almost every day on 3balls golf, so be patient and wait for exactly what you want. Read the descriptions carefully and ask questions if not sure. The times that I have called Ping customer service they were helpful and forthcoming with information and suggestions and have shaft spec and swing weight on file by serial number for every set sold. Hope this helps a bit. Cheers

I am a new golfer but two things strike me here. Your index 18 coupled with your stated difficulty hitting anything over an 8i. Not sure how you keep your handicap that low without being able to hit your mid and long irons. I believe you, It just kind of jumps out at me, that being said, Take 10 or 20 yards off each club and I bet you stat hitting those much better without buying new clubs.

In my bag....

Bombtech Grenade driver. 10.5* Aldila DVS60 stiff, 45"

Ping i20 irons, ProjectX5.5. 5 thru PW.

Tour Edge 3 Hybrid, Adams A7 4Hybrid

Titelist SM4 52-8. 56-12

Cleveland RTX 60-12 wedge.

Tour Edge xcg5 15* 3 Wood

Cheap crappy Wilson putter that works as well as anything for me.

It's a work in progress, I've only been playing for going on two years or so.

If what you wrote above I'd go with a G series set of irons

Thank-You all for your input, very informative and helpful especially the shaft input of Stiffs that feel less than advertised. About being an 18 and having trouble with longer irons I guess I should have been clearer. It's not that I don't / can't hit them it's that there not as pure as the 8 and below. I have never hit a 4 iron with the Ci7's where you get that pure "tick" off the club face, same with the 5, less so with the 6 and less yet again with 7, 8 and below are mostly pure. Alot of courses I play the par fours are reachable with Driver or three wood followed by 8 iron or below. It's the par 5's and long par 3's where I need 180-200 ish where I have no solution in my bag.

Thanks for your shaft suggestions. For all to see, below is the EBAY guide to Ping Shafts...

CS-LITE (Regular & Stiff): Weight: 93.9 (R), 107.3 (S) Torque: 1.8 (R), 1.7 (S) Description: Lightweight steel shaft that has a mid flex point and a mid to soft tip section. A very common shaft found in the G2 and G5 series. Ball Flight: This shaft is designed to hit the ball the highest of all of the shafts offered at this flex.

Z-Z65 (Stiff): Weight: 108.8g Torque: 1.6 Description: An updated version of the ZZ-Lite. Lightweight steel shaft that has a high flex point and stiff tip section. This shaft is only offered in stiff. The Z-Z65 is similar in flex to a Dynamic Gold S300, but is much lighter in weight. A very common shaft in ISI irons through current iron offerings. Ball Flight: This shaft is designed for a mid-ball flight due to the weight. It should fly lower then the CS-Lite and higher then the DGS and DGX.

ZZ-LITE (Stiff): Weight: 115.0g Torque: 1.9 Description: Very similar to the Z-Z65 but heavier in weight. The ZZ-Lite has a high flex point and stiff tip section. A very common shaft in Eye 2 irons. Ball Flight: Same as the Z-Z65. (NOT available for new orders)

JZ (Regular & Stiff): Weight: 109.8g (R), 115.1g (S) Torque: 1.9 (R) 1.7 (S) Description: A mid weight steel shaft that plays a little softer than the Z-Z65 and ZZ-Lite. A very common shaft in Zing, Zing 2, and ISI irons. Ball Flight: Due to the mid flex point of this shaft it is designed to hit the ball between the CS-Lite and the Z-Z65. (NOT available for new orders)

DGS (Stiff): Weight: 124.5g Torque: 1.5 Description: Dynamic Gold S-400. A heavy shaft with a high flex point and a stiff tip section. Ball Flight: Weight of this shaft should hit the ball lower then all of the shafts except the DGX.

DGX (X-Stiff): Weight: 122.8g Torque: 1.4 Description: Dynamic Gold X-100. A heavy shaft with a high flex point and a very stiff tip section. Ball Flight: This shaft is heavy and aimed at players with a high swing speed or quick tempo. The shaft should produce the lowest ball flight of all shafts listed.

KT & KT-M (Stiff): Weight: 106g Torque: 1.9 Description: A mid weight shaft with a high flex point and stiff tip section. These shafts are most commonly found in Eye2, and Zing irons. Ball Flight: Mid, similar to ZZ-Lite (NOT available for new orders)

Microtaper (Stiff): Weight: 115g Torque: 1.9 Description: A mid-weight shaft with a high flex point and stiff tip section. This shaft is very similar to the KT Shaft. Most commonly found in the K series, Eye, and Eye 2 irons. Ball Flight: Mid, similar to ZZ-Lite (NOT available for new orders)

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
