I've never been a good putter but over this season I've become a decent putter. However, in the last week or two, my putting has gone completely down the drain. I'm missing putts in every direction... pulling 'em, pushing some, and hooking others lol.

Was wondering if this has happened to anyone and how they got out of the funk.

Never has really happened yet *knock on wood* but either try a different putting grip ( a simple change can do wonders) or try to just practice more often. Line the ball up to the target with the lettering on the golf ball, if you don't already do that.

Hey sboardz, I was the same as you. I was never good and earlier in the summer I became the world's worst (literally). Basically I think that CG is right on the money. Try changing a stance or a grip to make yourself more comfortable standing over the ball. What I actually did is changed my putting grip to interlocking, the same as I use with all my other clubs. Now I am two and one putting from everywhere. Most importantly, be confident. I used to putt afraid of hitting the ball too hard, and now I just make sure I have my line and put a really nice stroke on it. I'm always surprised by how many go in and when they go past I can usually make them coming back (even up to a few feet). Hope this helps.

It happens. I'm usually an OK putter with my best being 28 putts. Usually I putt around 32 putts or so a round. Today I putted 40!!! I shot a 97 with that 40 putts. Subtract that I probably could have broke under 90. The 6 penalty shots didn't help either.

that happens to me when I start gripping the club too hard. The more free my hands feel the better.

Usually use NXT Extreme's or HX Hot's

I know this may sound incredibly obvious, preachy, or without thought, but, PRACTICE! And be confident in your putt! I read a great quote in a Golf Digest (I think it may have been June) from Arnold Palmer. It was something along the lines of "When over a putt I thought like I'd make ever single one." You have to have that belief! And practice will give you that belief. I was never a terrible putter, but I would RARELY make the outside 20 foot birdie. and that's were I was lacking in my game. Snce reading that and putting the time into my putting, I make those putts. There is nothing more enjoyable in golf than making putts. It's the greatest feeling there is.

I don't know how much time you have available to devote to putting, but anything will help. I used to do a drill in my apartment. I'd set up three putts. 3 feet, 8 feet, 12 feet. I'd make myself make them in a row. then I'd putt three 3 footers consecutively before I could go to bed. These days I use a drill I've named 5-and-in. I use five balls and try to putt out until no balls are left. If I make two balls on the first round, than I'm putting with three the next, until I make the last ball. It's so much fun that I'll often do this five or six times a day.

My putting had turned into an absolute disaster a few weeks ago but i had always planned on getting a new putter and my birthday came up and that was my present from a few mates.
So with the putter i went to the practice green and putted for about an hour, just getting my confidence up.
I had a round the other day and i literally couldnt miss. Ended up shooting 3 over for 9 holes (all that i could fit in) which was amazing considering my handicap but it was definatly my putting which makes my game.

So most likely your not in the market for a new putter however just hit up the practice green and putt and putt and putt some more to get your confidence back up. Its the key

Couple thoughts-

a few drills might help:
the clock drill- place 4-6 balls around a practice hole. keep putting until you make 30 in a row. If you miss one, start over.

the ladder drill- set clubs or pieces of string 3 feet apart starting at about 10 feet up to 30 or so feet. Practice putting stopping the ball between the strings. go for the longest first, then the next farthest etc. Then reverse it, closest first, then next closest, etc. Finally mix them up.

A good source for putting information and help is puttingzone.com

thanks for all the comments. I'm tryin a new stance atm my dad said he used when he was in a putting slump. Basically I'm standing a little open to the hole... seems to be working.

You are too concerned about outcome rather then just making a good stroke. The results will come if you make a solid stroke and not make every putt a live or die situation.

Next time you go to warm up or practise your putting, close your eye that is closest to the hole (great tip I saw the the GChannel). This will remove the hole from your vision and make the putt more about the stroke rather then the destination of the ball. It will also help you keep your head down during the stroke and help prevent you from peaking early. When you feel like your putting bad you are even more eager to see the out come, when you are making putts you don't need to look - you know its in! Your body knows what to do, it's just your brain that is getting in the way.

I dont remember where I read this could've been on this site, but a good way to stop gripping the club really hard when your nervous or what ever is to right before you swing squeeze the club as hard as you can while gripping the club, I know it works for normal swings and should work for putting too.

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

If you've done it before, you can do it again, especially with putting. My problems with putting are usually between the ears. When i have a 20 footer for par, I'm already thinking about my score, about 2 putting, ext. Try to concentrate more and be positive, it helped me alot.
