It looks like me and my family will be moving to San Antonio for a job in a few months. I wanted to move to a warmer climate (currently living in Eastern Washington state) so that I can play year round and I was lucky enough to find a good career opportunity.

I am curious about the golf. I have obviously been researching the area but I just wanted some feedback and opinions about the area courses. Any favorites? Ones to avoid? How long are the rounds typically? How tough is it to get a tee time? I live in a great golf community right now and a long round is 4 hours 15 minutes and it's pretty easy to get a tee time.

I'm really excited for the opportunity and it doesn't hurt that Edel golf is headquartered an hour away!

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

San Antonio is a great golf town.  Tons of great courses:  private courses, upscale daily fee courses, local public tracks, munis, and even pretty good military courses at Lackland AFB and Fort Sam Houston.  It gets hot as the pit of hell there in the summer, but the courses are playable year-round.

San Antonio is also very big--depending on where you live, you will have different options nearby.  I'd say the North and West sides of town have the best concentration of courses, but there are great courses all around the metro area.

Seriously, there are so many great options.  Just to name a few examples that come to mind...SA has old school "small track" country clubs (Oak Hills CC, a Tillinghast course from the 20s), historic public tracks (Pecan Valley which hosted major championships in the 60s), PGA Tour venues (TPC San Antonio), high end golf resorts (La Cantera), affordable golf getaway destinations (Tapatio Springs), and interesting feats of golf course design (the Quarry), just to name a few.  It has fantastic, low-price public courses, exclusive high-end clubs and everything in between.

$29 are you kidding? I guess I could look it up. But that is a great deal.

My experience is that the traffic can be horrendous at times.  San Antonio is a large sprawling metropolis.  My first recommendation would be to get a home as close as you can to your job.  Second is be aware that certain areas will flood during intense storms.  Lastly, I really like the NW area (La Cantera, Cedar Creek) but almost anywhere is going to be decent. (Pecan Valley is closed)

Just checked the resort website--says the resort is closed until April.  Both courses remain open, but the resort closure (in addition to the winter season) is probably what's keeping the prices so low right now.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I did see that the San Antonio golf trail offers a year pass for around $2400. That is unlimited play at the 7 municipal courses. Pretty great deal in my opinion just because I think I would enjoy having a variety vs. playing the same course every round.
