So I go over to the little course near me to practice short game stuff (not many courses near me have practice pitching greens). And there are signs there for this tournament.

Evidently a big deal, its the same tournament that Phil Mickelson, Tiger, etc. all won when they were juniors. I saw the head pro and had a brief but interesting conversation with him.

The overall tournament is held at 9 or 10 courses around San Diego, with the biggest kids at Torrey. It was 7 and 8 year olds at this course. They changed par a little, making the course par 70 when normally par 60 ( I think). He said almost all the kids shoot in the 70's, some under par. People from around the world are there. I asked him if these were academy kids or does that come later, he said no, some of these kids were already academy kids. Wow!

Their swings were great! Unbelievable, especially at that age. But so serious, the parents were hovering like crazy. No real laughing or even seeming to have fun. Believe it or not, it was tournament grind for 7 and 8 year olds. And they played incredibly slow too. Took forever to hit the ball. You'd think it was life and death.

Hope the kids don't burn out. It was pretty serious business.

Steve

Every July they have the US Kids competition in and around Pinehurst, NC.  MY wife and I were at MidPines one day when some of the kids were coming in for a practice round, and I was really impressed with their swings.  The acted just like miniature touring pros  On the other hand, there were 8 and 10 year olds who were travelling with a whole team, swing coach, shrink, parents, the whole thing.  Its hard to believe that level of attention and pressure is healthy for any kid.

Yeah, but it's not all like that, particularly at the local level.

We know some of the girls going to the 2015 Worlds, and one is in the age group under my daughter (who is 12-14). My kiddo just won the Player of the Year thing for 2015 12-14 year-old girls, today in fact, and some of the kids just play without even a parent caddie. Most of the parents know a bit about golf but not all. At this level, no swing instructors, no head shrinks, etc. Just a parent or two.

Congratulations to your daughter, that's a big achievement.
