At what speed do you need an X-stiff shaft?

I have always wondered if I needed a stiffer shaft on my driver. I went to Golf Galaxy and my swing speed was about 105. Does that warrant an x-stiff shaft?

Pretty unlikely. I'm 103-106, and I certainly wouldn't use an x-stiff.

Re: At what speed do you need an X-stiff shaft?

My driver speed is 110-112. I just switched to an X in the Proto "ByYou" shaft from a S in the same shaft. I love it but the S wasn't that far off. I still have S300s in my irons and an S in my three wood. I have tried a few other Xs in previous drivers and they have been too stiff. You probably don't need an X. A few key points to remember are: although swing speed is one factor, if you have a quick transition at the top of your swing, you might need a stiffer shaft, and, every manufacturer's shaft flex is a little different. one's stiff flex may be another company's regular flex. also, if you take ten of the exact same shaft, they all may be slightly different. You can check shaft stiffness on a deflection board. my theory is if you find a shaft that works, don't break it.

Most X flex shafts recommend 110 mph and above. If you are right at that swing speed then its best if you take a look at your tempo. If you have a smooth tempo you might be best staying with an S flex. If your a hard swinger then an x flex might be best. Get fitted, its the best way to tell.

Nope, I don't think so. Swing speed of 105 mph is good enough with stiff. The problem is as Fried Egg said, different shaft manufacturers have different standard in measuring the stiffness of their shafts. Also, your swing tempo is a factor in deciding which flex you should use. Best way to pick a shaft is to hit the launch monitor.

Re: At what speed do you need an X-stiff shaft?

HEY HEY HEY. I been asking myself this all the time cos i wasnt consistent with my driver. so i went to a pro he said dont use x stifff try a different shaft thats stiff ......

NOW i use a HIGH KICK SHAFT stiff flex as apposed to a MID KICK SHAFT . The high kick feels stiffer and now im a hell of a lot more consistent with it... Give it a try

For me it was just a case of changing from an F speed cobra driver to a X speed cobra driver . I have never hit a driver so well in my life believe me . Thanks to my new Driver and My coach Tim Absalom

My buddy uses an Aldila 65 XS on his driver. It's absoultely rediculious. It's like swinging a 2x4 with a brick on the end.

I second the motion to adjust the kick.

What does a higher kick point actually do? Does that make it feel like a stiffer shaft? I think I have a fairly smooth swing. I was almost considering a rifled 6.0 steel shaft. Who knows. I have all winter to figure it out!

A high kick point hits the ball lower. A low kick point hits the ball higher. Nothing to do with stiffness.

Unless you are extremely quick in your transition, you are better off with the S flex.
