This will take a little practice but try blading a wedge. Meaning, take a wedge, use a putting stoke, and try to hit the middle of the ball with the leading edge of your wedge. This allows the club to slide through the grass and make good contact with the ball. The ball will come out with a lot of topspin. So, it will roll out more than you expect. I use my 58, but a pw may be safer since its leading edge isn't as rounded which gives you a little more room for error.

Another option, if you have a blade putter, as opposed to a mallet, is to turn the putter so that the toe is pointing at the ball. This has the same effect as the bladed wedge. This lets the putter slide through the grass easier. Same topspin etc as above.

My toughest shot, since I fade the ball, is a tee shot with a strong left to right wind with trouble right.

Well given my handicap, most shots are difficult. One that really gets me is when the ball is stuck in the side of a high lip bunker. I usually end up knocking it back into the center of the bunker or flying it over the green. I had a par 4 the other day that my drive landed in a green side bunker like this. I ended up bogeying the hole. That sucked!

Putting. End of story. I average in the high 30's per round, and on a bad day I could be as high as 45.

Toughest full shot is pretty much any tight driving hole with OB on the left side. When I make big numbers this is probably the case.

I dislike when there are huge hills in the back of a green that is only maybe 10 yards to the pin. It makes it difficult to hit a shot that is strong enough to get up the hill but light enough not to roll all the way off.

Other than that... long irons.

If you carry a hybrid or 5-wood practice a putting stroke but using that club from the lie you described. The rounded sole will glide right through the grass and give you a higher margin for error than a bellied wedge or using the toe of a putter. Toughest shot for me is a downhill lie, I hate them. Yeah, I know hate is a strong word but it's appropriate.

The shortsided chip/pitch that sits down in heavy bermuda rough. I just don't like the unpredictability that comes with that shot.

Any iron shot that I have to hit on a low trajectory. I struggle a lot with that one.

This one is way up there for me. I have to close my stance a ton and really try to turn it over. Usually I will just hit my hybrid when I need a draw off the tee.

The toughest for me is with the ball below my feet. I am 6'8" and don't take much of a divot on flat lies, so when it's below my feet, watch out right. Throw in a downhill lie as well and you can forget about it.

Just about anything that requires more than minimal trajectory control. I can hit it generally high or low, but not with anything like precision.

Also, the fairway bunker. I usually struggle to advance the ball very effectively.

I don't play out of Bermuda but that shortside shot especially to a downward slope is a killer. If it is uphill or flat you can be more aggresive or flop it. Downhill I tend to declerate, of course I am usually pretty irrated also, either I have made a bad decision, or had a bad break to leave that kind of recovery shot.

You definitely need to check out some hybrids. I carried a 2-iron until last year and probably hit 3 out of 10 shots pure with it, I hated the deuce but could not find a fairway wood replacement. They either ballooned too much and the shallow faces didn't offer enough margin for error. I got a 2-iron replacement hybrid and it's become one of my favorite clubs. I like it so much I replaced the 3-iron from my set with a matching #3 hybrid. I can hit the hybrids higher and 10 yards farther than the irons they replaced. When I need to hit the fairway on a short, tight par 4 I grab the #2 hybrid and rip it with confidence.

    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
