Best Golf Course in Myrtle Beach?

Hello,

I will leave South Carolina in about a month, so I really want to play a gem out here. The max. greenfee shouldn't be higher than 120$. Therefore Kiawah Island Ocean Course or Harbourtown Golf Links are too expensive.

What is the best course to play in Myrtle Beach or South Carolina?

Thank you!

Two of the best courses I played were Lion's Paw and Panther's Run. Both are located in the same place. I'm not sure of the price, as it was part of a package, but it's really worth it. The signature hole is a 176 yard par-3 from the tips with bunkers around it, all shaped like a lion's paw with the pads and all. You can check out their website, its worth it! Here's the address:

Caledonia and True Blue are right next door to one another and are both favorites of mine. They are south though, and some folks don't like the extra drive down there.

Caledonia is a very..South Carolina-like course in my view. The course is set on great property with a Fishing Club as well. Some creative and challenging holes. 18 is many people's favorite.

True Blue I love for it's waste bunkers. Holes are roomy enough, but if you hit a leaker, and catch one of their many waste bunkers, you can 1) ground your club and 2) usually advance the ball (opposed to punching out).

I don't believe either would disappoint. I'd recommend checking the pricing as I'm not sure exactly, and of course a call for the current course conditions.

Have fun!

Yeah, I thought about Ture Blue and New Caledonia, but unfortuneably they cost already almost 160$ the time I would be able to play them!

What about..

Grande Dunes
The Dunes
Tidewater
TPC of Myrtle Beach
Barefoot Dye
Barefoot Love
...
Daufuskie Melrose
?

I played in Myrtle Beach Glen Dornoch, Heather Glen, Aberdeen and Long Bay and I liked them in this order!

Wow, I didn't think they were

that expensive. TPC Myrtle was great last time I was there (2 yrs ago). Great course, service etc. Heard lots of positive feedback on Dunes courses and Barefoot's as well, but no firsthand intel for you.

I've played two of the four Ocean Ridge Plantation courses -- Lion's Paw and Leopard's Chase. To me, both are very interesting and challenging courses. I'd recommend both of them. It seems to me (I've been wrong before) that Panther's Run is generally thought to be the best of the four courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation.

Here is a link http://www.oceanridge.com/root_c1024_v2.html to the Ocean Ridge Plantation website. Click on "Golf Club" at the top of the homepage and it will have a lot of info on each of their courses as well as one (Jaguar's Lair) that is currently under construction. Since you're coming all the way from Munich you might not know Ocean Ridge is five or six (rough estimate) miles into N.C. from the S.C. border and it's still a few miles from the border to (actual) Myrtle Beach. These (Ocean Ridge Plantation), and other Brunswick County N.C. courses are normally included in Myrtle Beach golf packages. Unfortunately I haven't played enough Myrtle Beach courses to have an opinion on which is the best course, but there are many very nice courses in the M.B. area. One of my personal favorites (although I'm sure it's not the best) is Wicked Stick http://www.wickedstick.com/ , a John Daly signature course.

Played Rivers Edge http://www.river18.com/ last year and that was a very nice course, left me a little humbled at the end. Brilliantly carved out of the property it is on, it is quite a challenge. Can't go wrong with a name like Palmer tied to it.

Not to challenge QQ's opinion, but personally I was disappointed with Wicked Stick. Being a fan of JD's I thought it would be fun to bang the driver all day, plus the course slogan, like JD's is "grip it and rip it". However I found myself hitting very few drivers, having to lay up short of hazards crossing the fairways(that didn't give an option to carry over). Sereval holes would be very wide then you would go in to the housing area of the course where the look and feel of the course would change completely. We played from the blue tees and most of the par 4's were around 350 yards. I found the course to be very bland and easy. It seemed like a way to push Daly's overpriced merchandise in the pro shop more than anything.

My parents have a condo in Myrtle Beach and travel down there for 60% of the year. I have to agree with others about True Blue and Caledonia. Both are on the up and up with Caledonia being the nicer of the two. Litchfield is also an excellent course and TPC Myrtle Beach may be the best of the bunch.

Also mentioned were Grand Dunes and Barefoot Landing. Excellent courses as well. Two other courses to consider would be Kings North at Myrtle Beach National as well as World Tour which has replicates of some of the most famous holes in the world. While they are not exact, it was interesting to play Amen Corner and the staff definitely presents an upscale experience that I believe the Founders Club failed to deliver.

One other thing to mention would be that I was down there yesterday and played the Founders Club on its opening and was severely disappointing. The course was in excellent shape but was not an overly difficult track. The club promotes itself as upscale but in my opinion is not in the same class as the courses mentioned above.

That's the beauty of golf, and just about everything else.

Different clubs, different beer, fans of different football teams, etc. etc. Different strokes for different folks!

By now it seems like we are going to play "The Dunes".
It was rated by the Golf Digest as the 3rd best public course in South Carolina after Kiawah and Harbour Town.

Thank you all for your input!
We just need more time and especially more money to play all the beauties...

I was a big fan of Wicked Stick. Probably because I could drive the green on about 3 or 4 par 4's

Like I said, we will see how much money and time will be left!

It makes me sad to spend ca. 250$ for 2 rounds of golf, even if they are great courses!

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
