I play the old X2 irons. My swing speed is low due to shoulder surgery. So it's around 80 mph. I am looking into getting new irons. I am going between Rogue and rogue X with graphite shafts. I hit my X2's low and never had a high ball flight. So I need some input on which one would be better for me. Handicap is a 13 trending to 15. Need to start trending other way. Thanks

Hello and welcome to TST. I assume you mean your driver swing speed is 80mph? Obviously the best way for you to choose is to see a fitter. If you know you aren’t going to do that then there are several manufacture’s sites that ask some questions and will statically fit you with a shaft. In the game improvement/super game improvement genre most all these irons are designed to get the ball in the air easier than player’s models. However the shaft has a very large role in your ball striking in regards to trajectory.

I would recommend getting custom fit by a club fitter in your area who has access to a launch monitor and will be able to identify which irons fit you the best

A couple things about getting fitted for irons.

Firstly, as others have said, getting fit is a great idea if you are buying new irons. There are so many shaft options, it's hard to know which is going to work best for you without a proper fitting.

As a 13 - 15 handicap, your swing should be consistent enough for a fitting.
Having said that, if your shoulder surgery is something that's going to heal and after it heals you are likely to get a bunch of swing speed back, you actually may want to wait until that healing process is complete before getting fit. If your swing speed (with a driver?) is 80 mph right now, but is likely to be 95 or 100 or more later after you completely heal up getting fit (or even getting new irons) now probably doesn't make a lot of sense. Wait until you are back to "normal" before getting fit for new irons.

On the other hand, if you swing speed is what it is after surgery and it's not going to get much better, than absolutely go git fitted.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Couple of things that’s my driver speed and shoulder is all healed so that’s what I am working with. As for fitting I live a good hour from a fitting place. Been playing for 45 years before shoulder I was a 5 handicap with age and a few health problems like both shoulders and hip replacement I am just looking for a few extra yards   Really want to know what people think of rogue vs rogue x clubs. Bought Cleveland launchers last year hated them sold them now back to X2’s

IMO 2 hours total of driving would be worth it to me to know I'm spending $1000+ on the correct clubs for my swing/game.

I think the rogue irons are a fine club. The Rogue X are really strong lofted but they do hit the ball really high even with the strong lofts. The Rogue X will definitely get you a few more yards.

I really do think you'll be making a mistake if you don't get fit. I hadn't been fit for irons in 20 years when I bought a new set this year. I was truly amazed at the number of shaft options available and not only that but the difference in performance the different shafts provided.

It's your money and the Rogues are a good product. I'm sure you'll enjoy the clubs even off the rack. But I'm curious … Why wouldn't you get fit??? It's fun. It's only an hour drive. If you're like me you'll likely play these clubs for 10 or even 20 years... So the cost is negligible when spread out over that time. Getting fit may have saved you the troubles you had with your Cleveland Launchers.... or at least let you know they weren't for you.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

I will go ahead and answer your question you are asking. The X line is different in 3 ways from the standard Rogue, all of which are designed purely to up the distance. First, the X line is physically longer by 1/4 inch over the Rogue. Figure the standard Rogue is also a bit long (talking static length here) to start with so the X could be considered 1/2 inch over standard. Second, the lofts are around 3 degrees stronger than the Rogue line (and the Rogue line is pretty strong to begin with). Third, the X line is 3 points lighter on the swing weight scale. Now as far as I can recall the shaft options are the same for both, so that means that the X line has a much lighter headweight.

The first two differences probably won't make any difference as to which you like more, but the SW difference would be the one I would be most concerned with. With your current game as you described it, I would think the light weight shouldn't bother you. The other consideration is if the club does end up feeling light, you can always add some lead tape to the head to increase that feel. You can't however go the other way if it's too heavy in the case of the standard Rogues.

I have hit both the Rogue X and base Rogue irons. Rogue X has noticeably more range dispersion.

What you might do is get Rogue 5i to PW, and get a Rogue X 4i as a clearout club.

Of course, get a fitting before you buy.

Good move on graphite shafts, less vibration will help save your shoulder.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
