Learn to Play Golf at Least a Little Before You Start Spending Big Bucks on Clubs

If you have little background on golf, the best move is to find a golf clinic for beginners. These sessions take place once or twice a week, and get beginners introduced into the game. Little chance for embarrassment since everyone is a newbie.

You will get separate sessions on putting, chipping, irons and woods. Often the clinic organizers will provide clubs for those who have none.

During the clinic, you can get advice on starter sets.

----------------

As for the £25 vs. £400 for driver,  not a very good example. Some super cheap golf clubs are knockoffs - inferior design and component metals - and simply won't work very well regardless of how much you develop your swing. And, plenty of good drivers hit between the two in price.

Used clubs from a reputable shop are a much better bet.

As for early fitting: get what's called a static fitting. The fitter checks clubs you like for lie angle, grip thickness, and shaft flex/weight relative to your swing speed and stance posture.

It's hard to get a relatively stable swing without using the same golf clubs each time you play.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Unfortunately the real moral of the story is that your daughter has a well involved and knowledgable father who will encourage her and give her advice so she can enjoy the game as much as possible.  But it still has to be fun for her.

When our twin boys were 11 they saw my old surfboards in the rafters.  For the next 10 years we got out as much as we could and shared waves together.  Our garage became the ding repair shop for their friends and we would shuttle everyone to the beach at least once a week.  Ironically both have ended up in Arizona, but dearly miss the ocean and we try to get out, they’re in their 30’s and I’m 68, whenever they come out.  I think there are still over 20 boards in our garage.

But when they were 10, they got boxed golf sets for Christmas.  We would take them to the pitch and putt.  They have never become as proficient as they did at surfing, but we get out and play at least one round whenever we get together.  They have obviously moved on from those boxed  set clubs, but they play because they are able to do it well enough to enjoy it and have had someone there to play with and encourage them... to make it fun.

I’m not advocating no fittings or lessons, but for someone starting out, and they have the athletic ability (a person has to have some physical ability to do any sport), having someone there to help them through is probably more important.

My father passed down to me showing me how to be very involved in my athletics while never ever pushing me into athletics and that includes golf.  He was the greatest coach I have ever had in my life and many people that he worked with in golf would say the same.  I was fortunate to have some amazing coaches in my life.

And you seem to have inherited those same traits.  I am very happy that your daughter is doing so well with golf.  It is hard to describe how rewarding it is to share a pastime with your children. Congratulations!

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
