The more I use my 256.14 wedge, the more I feel I would be better served with something else. It has too much bounce for firm conditions and doesn't respond great to opening the face up unless I'm hitting out of pretty grassy conditions.

Any ideas there? I'm thinking of something like a 254.10... should I go with even less bounce than 10 degrees?

You can see what I've got in the bag below. My gap wedge is 50 degrees.

Here's my approximate distances with a full swing FWIW:
PW: 125-135
GW: 115-125
SW: 90-100

Without a lob wedge, yeah, you probably use your sand wedge for more than out of the sand. I only use my sand wedge out of the sand (half the time) and out of the rough as well as for fuller shots from the fairway (1/2 or higher). I use my lob wedge most often.

I have a 254.10 and a 260.04. My PW is a 680.

Might want to ditch the GW. That yardage overlap is way too much - they shouldn't really butt up against each other at all. Learn how to take a little off your PW and the GW is redundant and will fill in the 100-125-yard hole easily.

Then keep the SW and use your LW more, or perhaps ditch the SW... but I'd still consider flipping your set around to get a PW, SW, LW. You'll really want that LW in October...

So skrumple thinks that a 54/58 combo is the way to go. Why not 52/58 or 54/60? Is there a best combo or is it user preference? My pitching wedge is 46 degrees.

Your PW is 46? Not 48?

I use my PW on full shots (115), 3/4 shots (100), and things slightly less than that. I spin the ball enough. If a flag is tucked just over a pin short of 100, my sand wedge will get me there just fine (256.10 currently - gonna get a 254.10 when it's available in spin milled).

You are almost dead on with mine as well. I'm also going to change as well...but not till next year or until my 'competitive' golf season is over.

I'm going to switch from a 52-56 to a 54-58 combination to give myself some more options around the green for flopping purposes. I just can't flop it with my 56 very well. I'm hoping my yardages will change to something like this: PW: 120-130 GW: 105-110 SW: 80-95 Like Erik said, you don't need those distances to butt against each other. 10 yards is a perfect gap between these clubs. That extra 2 degrees will help me more around the greens than anything...and I'll probably go with a small amount of bounce as well. I play on a lot of firm, tight fairways that require nipping the ball.

I go 48 - 54 - 58 as well. I've found it fills my gaps the best and i don't notice a difference with a 58 vs. 60. that's what i'd recommend.

Yeah, just checked the Titleist website again and the PW is 46 and the GW is 50. So 54/58 eh? As it is I'm 46 (PW) - 50 (GW) - 56 (SW). Hrmmm.... Pretty strong loft for a PW it seems. See Titleist 804.OS lofts here .

I'll keep my eyes out for a Vokey 54 and a Spin Milled 58

Right, because BSG gets everything right all the time. Uh huh. They're so much more reputable than talking with Titleist themselves...

O ok, I was just checking. I know BSg doesn't get everything right but I have heard a Lot of stuff from there before any other site the last few years that were right, I guess I'm just a trusting person.

Hey, thanks for the discussion folks... FYI, I have a couple of Titty Oil Cans in the bag now (thanks Erik). As it stands, I have a 54 and a 60. The 54 is going to cover up to a 100 yards better than my 56 was and the 60 should help me around the greens.

Frankly, I've yet to use them, so I've got to find my rythm with a new set of wedges. I've a lot less bounce than I'm accustomed to also. Shouldn't be too tough to transition, I shouldn't think.

Any suggestions for how to use them? What situations will each be best in? See signature for wedge loft/bounce.

54 will be good out of the sand and in the rough. It should be good from the fairway too, but you won't be able to open it up too much. For those shots (between a 54 and a 60), pinch a 60 a little lower.

Hit the 60 from 50 yards and in just about everywhere you need the highest shot possible. Be careful when you open it up - it takes a pretty darn hard swing to play that loft opened up and make the ball go very far forward. But darn will it stop. I play the 60 out of the bunker when the pin is tucked close.

    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
    • I had an interesting one yesterday, a local qualifier for the US Senior Open, at the Cascades Course at the Homestead.  Well, first things first, the VSGA arrnged for the officials to play the Cascades on Monday at the players' practice round rate.  Its lots of fun, rather old-style (built in the 1920s).  anyway, a player missed a short putt, and (apparently embarrassed) took a step to be ready to tap the ball back in.  The ball lipped out, and hit the player's foot.  I was nearby, and they waved me over, and asked "What do we do now?"  I was pretty sure of the ruling, but asked them to wait for a few seconds while i double-checked.  I did have it correct, even though its one of the more confusing rules in the book right now.  I'll leave the correct answer out for now, in case anyone wants to guess, or research it, and post their ruling.
