This is a something I was thinking for the past few days that I want all golfers opinions on. So I am in the market on updating my golf clubs and especially my irons, now I have a Callaway 8 Rogue that I want to get at least the 6 and 7 irons to go along with it but now being on a budget I may be able to only get one for now. If I bought one now and the other I am looking at sells, is it fine to go with a different brand of iron to fill the set?

I once had a set of Ping G5s 3i through PW. I also had a Cleveland 56* sand wedge. I was playing really well and really knew my distances for my clubs. A couple years later I noticed that I really needed a gap wedge for 100 yard shots. One day I found a Ping i3 UW in a used bin at the golf big box retail store.

Well it went 100 yards, but it had a bad habit of consistently landing 15 yards or right of my target. I ended up compensating for this, but it was sure frustrating if I forgot to compensate.

I would be concerned about loft, offset, weighting which could affect flight between different brands. I haven't looked in a few years, but there seemed to be so much stuff on eBay from good manufacturers. Full sets of irons less than $200?

When I go from my Ping e1 5i to my G30 3h, I have to be conscious if the offset and the draw bias on the hybrid. I think that playing irons from a set is important.

When I started out I was given a starter set of irons 3, 5, 7 and 9. Maybe you could go with the 4, 6, and PW to supplement you 8i. Lots of women's sets are half sets like that.

Buying clubs (irons) singly is a very uneconomical way to do it. Use whatever you have and then buy a complete iron set. My research shows that buying two irons or three irons individually is a similar price to buying a whole set. They price single irons high because they think someone needs tp replace a single club which is cheaper than buying a whole new set.

As long as that number at the end of the score card is satisfactory, what's in the bag is not a big deal.

I flew to DFW for husiness, and a visit with relatives. Didn't take my clubs with me.

Had an offer to play some golf at some nice courses in the aea. My nephew spent a morning driving me around the area to different golf outlets where I pieced together a short set of clubs. It was a mixed up set of used clubs.

Played a couple rounds with some big shot business types, who didn't take kindly to being out played by a rag tag bag of clubs.

Nothing wrong with a mixed bag of clubs. Irons, or otherwise.

In My Bag:
A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

    • Day 21, May 25.  Hit "the whole bucket" as practice today after reviewing my Skillest lesson.  I think something crept into my swing last week that wasn't in the lesson, so I went back to the lesson and renewed my focus.  Each ball was a minute or so, 2-3 slow rehearsal backswings and checking the mirror for how far back I was going. "The whole bucket" means every ball I have in the bin at my indoor practice room;  I counted when I put them back, that's six dozen plus six total.  That is probably more full swings than I took over the weekend (excluding range warm-ups) in two rounds!  But these were all with a 6-iron.
    • Day 265 5-25 Hit some balls just to see where i was, no "thoughts' except getting arms in front. Did some recording where i focused on getting chest through and arms in front.
    • Day 76 (25 May 26) - Broke out the "vintage" clubs (MacGregor blades, Wilson 4150 laminates) to work with clubs that are much less forgiving.  Worked through the bag using hard foam balls for the full swings, regular balls for the chips and pitches.  Found it to be a more focused session on making consistent contact.
    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
