I was recently fit for new irons.  During the fitting I was hitting these irons straight according to the launch monitor but my first trip out with them everything was a fade.  The new irons have less offset than my old set and oversized grips with an extra wrap at the bottom because of my arthritis.  The fade is not bad but I was really comfortable with my straight shot shape as I only needed to worry about distance, not distance and how much fade I was going to get.   What do I need to do to get that straight shot back?

The offset likely has nothing to do with it

I’d remove  the extra wrap under your grip.  I bet that little bit of reduced grip diameter is enough to just close your club face enough...

Put your old irons back in the bag :-P

But in all seriousness, you shouldn't be hitting the ball differently on the course than you were at your fitting unless you did something differently during the fitting than you normally do, you made changes to your swing after the fitting, or the fitting wasn't very good.

Thanks Bill.  The only difference between the fitting and my new irons is the grip.  The fitting was with standard grips but they recommended oversized with an extra wrap because of my arthritis. Maybe I need to make a slight modification to my grip to compensate?  I have a pretty neutral right hand. I’ll try rolling it under just a bit more so I can close the club face faster next round.

That will likely do nothing at all. Grip thickness has nothing really to do with “releasing” the club or anything like that.

OP, please define “fade.”

Also, inside it’s probably easier to align. Were you fit indoors on a mat with a launch monitor?

I am getting good trajectory right on line but when the ball reaches it’s apex it just drops off to the right about 10-15 yards.  I was fit indoors on a mat with a launch monitor.  Another factor may be I went from a steel regular shaft to a graphite r2 flex.

Don't make any snap judgements until you have more than one round under your belt. Sounds like you now have a considerably different set up than previously so it will take some time to get used to. At least 4 more rounds or some time at the range before I would start guessing and changing things willy nilly.

    • Day 23: did the yardstick putting drill for a while. Checked set up in the mirror - need to get those hands more vertical.
    • PGA didn’t make Scottie their golden boy. He made his self number one by beating everybody that showed up, including Rahm, Bryson and all the other ones that were with the PGA and left. PGA offered them a way back, Koepka took it and Reeds on his way back.
    • Day 43 (20 Apr 26) - Day spent helping with golf team conference tournament, did get in some swings with the Pw after I got home.
    • Day 12, April 20.  I spent the better part of an hour practicing various putting, primarily within 10'.   I finished with a 4' drill, the double around-the-world (eventually).  That is, set down 12 coins around the cup at 4', all face up.  Go around the clock.  Make the putt?  Turn the coin over (if it's heads-up) or pick it up (if tails up).  Count the total putts needed to sink all 24 (two from each station).  I took 48 total putts, not great, even given how bad my putting is, but is a wake-up call.  I hope to add to my schedule a lot more time to practice (period) and also putting.   For context, 37 total putts on this drill is about the 18 handicap baseline, and as someone aiming to get his handicap into the single digits in the coming months, making another 4' putt per round would go a decent way ... or even better, getting my 4' putt average under 65% (the bogey baseline).  It'd be great to even get up to 80% (scratch baseline) of course. Also, to clarify yesterday's comment, when I "went for it in two" on that par-5, the "it" I was going for in two was the green, not the boundary fence, despite where the ball ended up. 😕
    • Day 243 4-20 wrist arch in downswing and some flow drills. Worked on some hip/chest sepeation in backswing. Used mirror and recorded. Foam balls.
