Pelz seems to suggest using a > 60* wedge if you have room in your bag, which i do!

Bah, I think one should be able to play any type of chip or pitch, flop or approach shot with nothing more than a 58* wedge. I think a 64* is just a waste of a club for the 14-club rule. A 64* I could see using only when I need to hit some ultra-extreme flop or bunker shot, which I rarely find the need to hit to begin with. Such a show-boat, low percentage type shot. Save the room in your bag for clubs for extra distance. 64* wedge, Fooey on you I say!

Pelz's multiwedge idea is good in theory, but he has taken it to the extreme. Most average golfers don't hit the 60 degree wedge with any consistency, let alone a 64*. The idea of carrying a PW, GW and SW works well for most golfers...evenly spaced yardages, and I don't care how many wedges you carry, you will still have to manufacture quite a few half shots. Just open the SW club up a bit and presto...you have a 64*.

Courses generally get longer and longer, so an extra long club sometimes helps, too. I carry a driver, 4W 16* and a 19* and 22* hybrid, works well for me, as well as carrying a PW, GW, and SW (56). Funny how I played golf well with my short game for 20 years with just a PW and SW.

Unless you're a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG bomber and are EXTREMELY exact with your wedges (to the yard) and hardly ever need anything higher than a 5 iron, DON'T BOTHER.

Funny, Pelz keeps pushing higher lofted wedges and he just came out with his own line. (Bobby Jones)

In my opinion a wedge with more than 58 degrees is not required unless you are playing very very fast greens. If you cant stop a 58 degree or lower you need to learn to strike the ball properly.

Ironic that you say the cut off for proper ball striking ability is 58 degrees and, sure enough, you carry a 58 degree wedge!!!!! Modesty much????

64 seems extreme to me, but whatever gives you confidence and keeps your bag at 14 or fewer clubs is good in my book.

I have tried the 64* and I don't think there is much of a use for it unless you constantly hit fairways because the 64* is terrible in the rough or the frindge. The rough you have to wack at it with Superman speed to get some results and the frindge you must lit is crisp to land softly.

I agree that a 58* is more than enough for anyone.

Seems like way too much loft to me. Pelz is pretty obsessed with wedge shots though. Just watch one of his shows on the Golf Channel once.

Ok, I'll put it honestly, I strike the ball well enough to stop the ball on reasonably fast greens, from a variety of distances and lies to not warrant needing a 60 degree wedge or higher.

What if they are unreasonably fast? Say 13 feet on the Stimpmeter?

My new wedge system is the Cleveland CG-12 RTG 52*-58*-64* and is working out great for me. On the greens I play it has been the best system I have used. From the fairway the 64* is my 60 yard club which I find I use about 5-6 times a round. Mine stays in the bag.

Pelz is a good short game guru but I disagree STRONGLY with the 64* wedge comment. Lob wedge is as high a lofted club as any player should ever need.

    • ^^^ I think this year gave us something incredibly exciting, but also special. That list of career grand slam winner is something else. Well, except for Gary Player.
    • I have to say I agree with Ben. It was impressive. I enjoy the Masters every year, I feel like this year gave us something really entertaining, but it's also possible I'm just a prisoner of the moment.
    • I'm going to pile on @TommyRude. The more I think about this take the funnier it gets in my head.  Colin Montgomerie lost at least three majors down the stretch that I can think of. 1994 US Open shot 78 in a three-person-play-off losing to Ernie Els (and Loren Roberts). Montgomerie pulled drivers left and pushed them right the entire play-off round. 1998 Masters; pulled three of his last five approach shots left. Ended up finishing tied for eighth.  2006 US Open was tied for the lead (with Phil). He was sitting in the middle of the fairway on 18. Hit his approach short, pulled his chip shot long left, 3 putted.  Therefore clearly, Colin Montgomerie's reliance on bulky musculature and overly testosterone driven attitude obviously caused these issues. 😁 If you want to go the other way, I know Brooks Koepka has credited all five of his majors to the fact that he's powerfully built. ... I'll suggest DeChambeau may say the same thing.
