Fifteen people in China were convicted this week for their roles in a major counterfeit golf club ring, an industry watchdog association named U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group reported.

Following what the U.S.-based business group called the largest raid of counterfeit golf gear ever, conducted in 2020, a court in the Chinese district of Pudong convicted all 15 people on trial after the raid. The total case value of the faked equipment was more than $1.8 million and involved 120,000 pieces of equipment falsely carrying the branding of Titleist, TaylorMade, PXG, Ping, Callaway and Cleveland/Srixon.

The case involved raids at 10 locations, including the manufacturer of the club heads, shaft and grip suppliers, owners of assembling workshops, shipping centers and online chat rooms. Counterfeit products confiscated in the raids included complete golf clubs, club heads, shafts, grips, bags, labels and more. Photos of the raid can be found on the industry group’s website, www.keepgolfreal.com, and on Facebook.

The U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group was formed in 2004 to support international law enforcement as it pertains to misrepresented golf gear. The group includes Acushnet (Titleist and FootJoy), Callaway, Cleveland/Srixon, Ping, PXG, TaylorMade and Adams Golf. The group said in the release that its efforts have led to the shutdown of more than 1,500 websites involved in counterfeiting and have led to the seizure of more than 2 million faked products.

I’ve seen this stuff in China. Shanghai has a mall called Pearl City. They have counterfeit everything from clubs, to Gucci bags, Rolexes, etc. The golf stuff was easily recognized by me as fake.

My Aussie friend wanted to buy a Drew Brees jersey for her son, who was a fan. She was negotiating with a vendor and asked my if $80 US was too much. I told her that I could get a real one for $50. So she left. The vendor lady was pissed and yelled at me in Chinese as we walked away. Later on our way out she saw us again and started yelling again. It was hilarious.

    • Day 26, May 30.  24 practice balls today;  dozen with the 6-iron, slow and usual full swing.   Because I wasn't super happy with my quarter and half swings yesterday, I also hit six of each with my UW.  What I didn't practice was a high shot that doesn't travel very far (no, I don't mean popping up a drive), and maybe that's something I need to figure out how to hit (probably would be outdoors, not inside).  Today's practice was, as many of mine are, indoors, off a mat, into a net, real balls.
    • Day 270 5-30 Lower arm more infront, not so stuck to side. Getting chest through with some speed.
    • A nice consistent road is just as satisfying as a round with a few outstanding shots. nice round.
    • Foundation Session #2
    • I shot an 85 yesterday without any shots that really stood out as spectacular to me.  On the first nine, the highest SG shots that didn't originate on a tee were a 22 yard chip from the rough to 6' and sinking a 10' putt (not the same hole).   On the second nine, driver 4-hybrid to 17' on a 421 yard par-4 was pretty cool.  Sinking a 15' putt for par on the 420-yard par-4 15th was my largest SG of the day (0.98 vs 10 hcp), and that one goes on my acting resume because when it went in, I acted like I wasn't surprised I made the putt.   I'm a lot happier with that round than this post indicates.  It shows I can play to a pretty good score (a 10-11 handicap shooting 85 on a 70.9 / 125 / 6400 yard is a good performance I think) without having to work miracles.
