I'm having trouble lately getting out of green side bunkers.

Currently have a 60* 10 bounce Callaway MD

56* 8 bounce Callaway MD

56* 10 bounce  Titleist  SM 7

My grip, stance and swing are all wrong right now and need to get back to basics.

Just a year ago I was exceptionally good out of sand??? What went wrong?

Welcome to The Sand Trap! Any club can do in a bunker. You may just need to refresh your technique. The thread below has a video and discussion.

I use my 58 high bounce wedge out of the sand. I stand with my feet fairly wide, hands low, weight a little left and swing with soft arms. And I just think about taking sand and focus behind the ball. I don’t open the face too much unless I need to go high.

Also, we have a Member Swings section. You could video some sand shots and post there for help.

Not all bunker shots are played the same, pending sand condition, the lie in the bunker (uphill, level or downslope)
Most bunker shots played from the level area, I splash the ball out with a solid thump of the sole of the club.
Uphill, it's more about hitting behind the ball a certain amount to create a cushion of sand between the ball and club face.

Are you thinning the shots, or hittting them fat or something else?

I once spent 6 months in a sand trap.  Well, not literally.  But every day, for half a year, I spent an hour in the practice trap hitting to a flag, practicing uphill, flat, downhill, side hill lies.  At different distances.  I made myself get better, much better.

I started looking forward to trap shots.  Not long afterwards I played in a scramble with a choice on one par 5, near the green, of making a difficult chip/pitch or taking an easy bunker shot.  I remember lobbying for the sand but scrambles being scrambles, everyone in the group was shaken to the core at the thought of executing a sand shot.  We chipped up poorly and only made par.

To this day I still relish being in a greenside trap vs. greenside rough or gnarly uneven lie for a pitch shot.

I've been thinking them, then fat sometimes.  Having trouble bringing the club face back to where I intend to with the proper swing speed. Mabey coming in a bit steep also

    • Day 4 (24 Jun 26) - Played the mid-week shootout - iffy day on putts as I had 35 and of late been in the upper 20's.   Greens recently verti-cut and they are a bit bump and long haired - no excuses as I need to learn to trust making the proper adjustments.   Overall a decent day with some solid long game shots.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
