Can a Bad Golfer Grow Into a Set of Players Clubs?

I've played very little golf in the last 15 years and am just starting to get back into it. I wasn't great 15 years ago, but I could usually break 100. I'm now 64 years old and working on my swing. I plan to start lessons at Golftec soon. I just ran across what seems like a great deal on a set of Callaway Apex Irons. They are from 2019, but used very little as the owner hurt his back shortly after getting the clubs. He offered to sell them to me for $300. Here's my question: I know I should be looking at a new set of game improvement clubs, but this deal is tempting to me. Can I learn to hit these clubs in, say, 1 year, with the help of lessons and some dedicated practice time, or should I forget about them and get a set of SIM2s?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff, that's a great price for a set of beautiful clubs.  Not from personal experience but I have read many places that one can grow into his/her clubs... that they might force you to become a better golfer.  So I would say "Go for it!" but be ready to sell if they seem to be a hindrance.  You can probably get $400 to $500 for them.

$300 for Apex irons in good condition? That’s an incredible deal. I’ve played the Apex irons, CF and pro versions. They are phenomenal irons.

I bought them today for $280. 5-PW, Oban shafts, great condition. Haven't been to the range yet, but I've hit some balls in my garage. They don't seem to be hard to hit, but I guess the issue might be that when I mishit the ball, the results will be worse that if I were using a game improvement iron. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to find out this weekend. Happy with them so far, though.

Actually, the 2019 Apex irons were partially considered a game improvement iron.

Like @Double Mocha Man said…those Apex irons aren’t blades or muscle backs. You’re all good my friend. Even mis-hits will be ok!

Well, I hit a bucket of balls with the Apex irons last weekend, and I did pretty badly with them. The shafts are Oban steel shafts, and are a bit heavy and stiff. Even my "good" shots didn't feel very good. So, I dropped into my local PGA Tour Superstore this evening and asked for a fitting. To make a long story short, I ended up trading in my Apex irons for $120 more than I paid for them and bought a new set of Taylormade M4s with graphite shafts. I hit the M4s pretty well in the bay--much better than the Apexes, and they were available. I would have liked to have tried  other sets like the Sim2s, but they are out of stock and the fitter said they don't know when they'll be able to get them.

So, I have to admit, it was a bit of an impulse buy and patience is not my strong suit, but I think I'll be happy with these clubs for awhile. And PGA Tour Superstore has their "playability" guarantee--If you play with them for awhile and you decide they're not right for you, you have 90 days to bring them back and exchange them for a different set. Honestly, I'm not sure about the fine print, but it sounds good when they're pitching it to you. 🤣

@Longjourney, last year I bought a set of Ping i500’s after playing the G5’s for more than a decade, and while they are not blades, they are less forgiving, but I’ve grown accustomed to them.  I should’ve stayed with the G series line up with my skill level, but I don’t regret it at all. I love my clubs.  I imagine you’ll do well, just work on your swing more 😉

You’ll be just fine. The shaft is often quite underrated when it comes to clubs. We see a lot more advertising about clubs than we do shafts. Did you hit the Apex irons with different shafts? No worries if not. You’ll be fine with the TM M4s. But I’m curious if you know what the weight of the Oban steel shafts were and what’s your new graphite shaft weight?

@Vinsk, the fitter looked up the shafts on the Apexes and they were 110 grams. I didn't get the weight of the graphite shafts on the M4s, but they were regular flex and felt quite a bit lighter.

Ok. Most likely the graphite shafts will have the weight somewhere on the shaft. I’m guessing 80g but either way I’m thinking the graphites are considerably lighter, relatively speaking.

    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
