Stacey Sumners and her family have discovered many things about turf, business, life, people and themselves since acquiring a 107-acre Michigan property.

An interesting little article.  I am pretty sure I will never find my way to Dowagiac, MI, to play their course but one never knows.  I suspect many of us have briefly fantasized about owning a golf course.  I know I have but I also always knew running a golf operation was not fun & games.  They picked a good time to own a course in Michigan because after March, 2020, the business of golf has been booming.

The pictures didn't make it look like much of a place you'd want to visit. I realize that most of them were from the early years, but still… yow.

I don't need awesome conditions, but you need a base level of reasonable conditions.

I think that course used to be called something else...I believe that I played there back in the late 90's?

My bag:

Taylor Made R7 (x-stiff).
Taylor Made Burner 2 irons (stiff)

The riskiness of it all makes my wallet hurt, but it is good that people still chase their dreams.

From what I've heard, it sounds like we got a couple of similar resurrection efforts here in my area. Two courses that have been shut down for the last three or four years are supposed to re-open next spring.

Going to make an effort to venture off the home course and pay them a visit.

Near my in-laws in Great Barrington, MA, there was a public course that finally closed a few years ago. They kept trying to sell the course (I think it was on the market for $1.5M-$2M) and then just closed down from lack of business. I heard  a solar developer bought the land but it's still just covered with weeds. I miss that place.

This course in MI is less than an hour from a friend's summer place on Lake Michigan. Maybe I'll check it out next time I'm out there.

    • Range day working with the 6 & 7 irons.  As we have grass and it’s been beat to death, I hit off short tee pegs.  Solid session with the irons - even if there were a few wonky hosel rockets with the 7 when I did not stay in the process.  Finished the session with some work with the driver, focused on setup and tempo.
    • Day 195: did a stack session.
    • Day 27 - 40 minutes of chipping work; range was closed this morning. Worked on lofted chips with 58, bump-and-run with 7 and 9 irons.
    • Congratulations.   It sounds like a ton of work but I'm sure it is rewarding.
    • Well now the ordeal is over, and I'm back home.  If anyone is interested in doing one of these workshops, I recommend it, but its a lot of information in a short time frame.  Its been compared to taking a drink of water from a fire hose.  A lot of the "enjoyment" comes from the personalities of the instructors.  In my previous workshops, I've had one instructor who was good, and the other was exceptional.  This time, both instructors were exceptional, as was the "coordinator", who also served as instructor (his first time) for a couple of segments.  You have almost certainly heard each of the instructors on telecasts as the "rules voice", and have quite possibly seen coordinator-Jay on the USGA rules of Golf videos on Youtube and the USGA website.   A nice surprise, I got my exam results in an email earlier today.  I guess it helps that our class was held maybe 300 yards from the USGA satellite office in Pinehurst.  I'm really pleased, I improved on my past performances, and can claim the "Expert" title again.
