I have just recently started playing again after about 5 years or so of..well...not playing I guess. I have always had a horrible slice and couldn't hit my irons to save my life. I played in mid February and shot a, now try not to laugh, 146
I went out again almost a month later and shot, please maintain your resolve to composure, 138
I just couldn't "get it", and it was frustrating the snot out of me.
I went the other day and took a lesson at Golf Galaxy. Yeah yeah, I know it was indoors off of a mat and all, but the guy has been teaching for 40 years so I figured "why not"?

Well, I went out this afternoon to play, and started off a bit shaky. First tee ball OB ending up with 3 penalty strokes. Next tee ball OB...by this time I'm thinking "just go home", but I'm glad I didn't. My iron play just seemed to "turn on" after a while, and I was making some really nice shots. The wedge and putter caught fire and I managed to save a 108 out of it all.

I realize 108 isn't exactly a good score, but for me today you'd have thought I had broken par! I only took one penalty on the back 9, which for me is phenomenal. I had 7 one putts, 3 two putts, and I even chipped one in from about 10 yards.
I even carded my first birdie!

108 is still a long way from good, but the confidence boost of knocking off 30 strokes at one time feels soooooo good.

Anywho, sorry for the rambling, but I don't know who else to tell that would care

You go! Gotta start somewhere. Consider getting some instruction then spend some range and putting green time ingraining some good habits. And most importantly, have fun!

wow, those are huge numbers.

thinking back, i could probably easily break 100 using my 8 iron only.

keep it up

108 is phenomenal. I remember my 158s like they were yesterday, even though they're over a year and a half in the past.

Great job. Keep it up and a double digit score is in your future.

Tell us about your first birdie. My first one was so anti-climactic that I prefer others' stories.

I'm not sure mine makes for all that spectacular a story. It was on a 477 yard par 5. Tee shot was off a bit in the right rough. Pulled out a 3 iron for a second. Thinned it a bit but it ran in right to my sand wedge range. Knocked a sand wedge to about 8' and made the little downhill right to left for a 4

Funny you should say that. My first par-5 birdie involved topping a 3-iron for my second shot

Anyway, it's good you got the first birdie out of the way. Now you don't have to fear a GIR anymore, if that was an issue

Congrats on the 108. Don't tell yourself that it isn't a good score. We all had to start somewhere, and have all been there. I am sure you will break 100 soon. Good luck.

I don't know that I have ever shot a 158, but if I had, I wouldn't have added the scores anyway :)

How stoked were you?? Congratulations - I shot a 108 (broke 110 for the first time) about this time last year and it was an AWESOME feeling. Keep at it, it won't be long before you are threatening 100!

that sounds like a milestone round. It will be a great spark for you. I remember shooting in the 60s for 9 holes not so long ago. You are on a good track. Go get 'em!

I'm betting 90s on my next round. If it had "clicked on" about 5 holes earlier I would have been in the low 90s that round.

Let's just hope I didn't jinx myself with the prediction

It isn't so much jinxing yourself as thinking too far in the future. Go out and

have a good time , whether you shoot 54, 154, or anything in between. And you'll get a better score while you're enjoying yourself

Hi There,

Congrats on your personal best. Well done Bigman! I only started playing last year really and haven't played since October, so looking forward to going out again.

I go out with 3 golf pals who are all pretty much better than me, I learn a bit from them and we have fun. That's the main thing, enjoy the hopefully good weather, have a fun time with your friends and of course enjoy the game.

Awesome! Bittersweet memories for me when I had such breakthrough moments... nowadays they aren't as pronounced. One piece of encouragement I'd offer is that a 30 shot improvement is a huge variance, which means you have what it takes to continually improve, but you'll still experience some growing pains. Anytime you improve, it means you are changing things you are correcting things to make yourself better, and with changes comes understanding from negative results. Keep your head up and stay positive and you'll continue to improve. Much luck and success!

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
