Not sure if this has already been covered.

Besides the Pinehurst resort courses, what are favorites?

I've played:

Hyland Hills
Talamore
Little River
Southern Pines
Foxfire (west)
Tobacco Road
The Pit
Tot Hill

They're all good - I liked Talamore and Little River the most.

Eventually, I'll get to Legacy, Forest Creek, Pinewild.

Suggestions?

Steve

Never been. Evidently I may go later this year as I was invited to a golf trip there.

Isn't Pine Needles nearby?

Bethpage Black and Red Courses are by far my favorite. Im sure whenever I end up playing the pinehurst courses I will love them, too. I love courses where I can hit the ball great and still get end up getting my ass kicked. Pine Hill in south jersey (before it became private) was also one of my favorite courses.

Pine Needles is right there... and it is absolutely fantastic. I have not played #2, but I have heard from many that have played both and they say Pine Needles is the better of the two. The greens were like nothing I had played before. My wife got the second birdie of her life there... so she has a great memory of the course.

I also played the Legacy Golf Links and Whispering Pines (East). Both were nice courses. Legacy is more similar to courses I have played in northern MI and elsewhere. It was very secluded and scenic. Legacy was an interesting and challenging course... not real tricked up like Tobacco Road or the Pitt, but still a highly enjoyable, challenging and visually pleasing course. Whispering Pines was less impressive than the other two... but very enjoyable. It was a very traditional course with greens simlar to a Donald Ross course (it was designed by Maples). I had a lot of fun on Whispering Pines, it was early in the season and wasn't in as good of shape as Legacy and Pine Needles, but it was still lots of fun. I would definately hit up Pine Needles if you can... Legacy is a nice break from the tricky Donald Ross type greens on many of the area courses, and Whispering Pines is a great more affordable round that still provides top notch traditional type golf. here's a link to another thread I started before I went on vacation... http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9599

I would agree. Pine Needles is a better course, particularly for the non-PGA Tour pro golfer (it can't be stretched as long as #2). If I had 10 rounds to play at either Pinehurst or Pine Needles, I'd play 8 at Pine Needles and 2 at Pinehurst #2. I like Pine Needles that much more.

Interesting and helpful, thanks.

It's worth noting how much I love NC courses. My parents have a place in the Blue Ridge Mts. that offer some incredible golf. Even the muni's are insane. Hope to play in Pinehurst soon.

I heard alot of good things about Pine Needles. I took a lesson there once and was tempted to play. So PN and Whispering Pines. Thanks.
