3 wood vs. *16 hybrid

I was out hitting some balls for the first time this year. I was hitting a 15* ping g5 3 wood with a stiff shaft. I was also hitting a ping g5 16* hybrid also with a stiff shaft. The hybrid was going as far as the 3 wood. What's up with that? Why would you need to carry both? Would appreciate any insight...confused.

well if you are hitting it that far why carry both. The hybrid is batter any ways.

If you hit them the same distance then don't carry both. However for some/most people the 3 wood goes further so they do carry both. For instance, my 3 wood goes 210-220 and my hybrid goes 200-210 so I use both. But that is why we get to organize our own bags.

Yeah I'd be a little surprised if they truly went the same distance. It's tough to tell on a range, but according to the specs, the hybrid not only has 1* more of loft, but the shaft is like 2" shorter.

Like the other response says, it's all about yardages....and the gaps. Personally I don't care what the club "says" so to speak-I care more about how far I hit it. If it goes the same as another club I already have, no sense in carrying it.

If they do indeed go just as far, then I would stick with the Hybrid if you are deciding between the two. Personally, I love my 3 wood, but can't give myself a shot for hitting the green in 2 shots on a par 5 if my drive ends up in the deep rough with a 3 wood.

Just curious, do you use your 15* hybrid for that shot? I have the exact same club and I love it, but I haven't learned to hit it well out of the rough.

Although most people are saying keep the hybrid, I have to say that I disagree, kind of but not fully. I think if they do go the same distance then you need to evaluate what you will use that yardage for more. For me I would keep the three wood, because I'm not a long hitter at all, so generally I am not looking to hit a par 5 in two, I would use it for tough driving holes, and short par 4's. Now if you are the guy who goes for the green in two on a par 5 every chance you get then I would say keep the hybrid, since it will be more consistent out of the rough and tough lies as it has already been stated.

Go with a 3 Wood keep the ball lower and have more control

Having a hybrid that's easier to hit and flies further than any 3-wood I've hit is the reason I don't carry a 3-wood. Like someone mentioned above, that's why we get to organize our own bags. My 17* hybrid is the easiest club to hit in my bag; 245 yards off the tee and 220 off the deck.

My personal choice is the 3W, strange enough am even more consistent with it than my driver off the tee. I also find it workable on the fairway. If am in the rough, then its either my 5 wood or my 2i hybrid (now this is my dilemma which of the two gets a vacation?). What can I say? I'm a convert...never liked the 3 wood, never could hit, so never bothered with it...until i got to hit the G10 and thats when the love affair started

Keep the 3W and get a more lofted hybrid to fill the gap. 3W has many uses too (driving, low flight, wind, etc.).

I personally dont carry a 3wd. I was never a consistent player with a 3 wood, and decided to try out a 1 hybrid (14*) and it has taken over the slot in my bag no questions asked. I hit it as far or farther than the 3 wood and have much better consistency with it. I personally dont see the benefit of a 3 wood if you dont hit it well, as you can do anything with the hybrid that you can with the 3 wood.
