Buying new irons, need opinions please

I have been playing Callaway X-14s in steel shaft since they came out.
I'm looking to buy a new set and have it narrowed down to two.
1st...Callaway X-20 with stiff graphite shafts.
2nd...Taylor Made R-7 with stiff graphite shafts.
Does anyone have any experience with either ??
Let me hear the good, bad or ugly !!

I've hit both at a range, and I find them very similar. I was using stiff steel shafts, though. I liked the Taylor Made Burner XD's, too. The R7's are being discontinued.

I found the r7 with stiff graphite shaft a bit "wobbly" and light in the backswing, if that makes any sense to you. Certainly noticed a big difference from steel. If you look away from any special type of shaft, I found both to be very similar when hitting and comparing them.

I do understand. Of the two I am leaning towards the X-20 because the shaft has a better feel at impact for me.

What about the Ping G-10s ??
How do they compare with the Callaway ?

If you liked X-20, you many want to try X 20 tour as well.

When I tested many irons last year, I almost buy X-20 and happened to test and liked X-20 tour better, maybe it was a shaft (Project X flighted) that I like better than TT uniflex. Club is somewhat forgiving to be in tour's category, but working good for my purpose.

The Ping G-10's are very good clubs and so are the Callaway x-20 (and x-20 tours). So you can't really go wrong. Just go with whichever you feel more comfortable with. I think The Callway's would probably be a slightly better option but both are worth their money.

If you haven't already, you really ought to take a demo set of the Pings out for a round. I still have my old X-14s, but when I tried the Ping G-2 the year they came out, I was hooked. I'll occasionally pull out the X-14s for a round, but I always go back to the Pings.

I just got the x-20s and I've played 5 rounds with them. I LOVE them!!!

I used to be a 4 handicap, but I'm returning to golf after 10 years away. I'm now around a 9 or 10. I got the Titleist 735s last year, but they were too hard to hit well consistently. I played the x-20s while on vacation as rental clubs and I love them.

I have a pretty high swing speed so I have 6.5 stiff steel shafts. My 9 iron carry distance is about 143 yards.

The sweet spot is so large on this club, I don't find that I often hit the 'jumper' shot that is 10+ yards longers when you really get it on the screws.... rather when you really toe or heel one, you can't feel it as much, but your ball flight is much better then a gross mishead with a perimeter weighted club.

Your decision should definitely be based on how they feel and look to you. Personally I tested the x-20's, x-20 tour, g10's, i10's, r7, and r7tp. As a person new to the game, I wanted clubs that I could grow into for a couple of years. The x-20's topline looked way too thick for my taste, g10's wide sole made it a more super game improvement iron than a game improvement iron. I ended up with the r7's as they fit my aesthetic taste as well as some forgiveness and shot shaping ability. Have not regretted my decision at all.

All in all, you can't go wrong with the x20, r7, or g10.. they are all decent irons with forgiveness.
