How to Shift Weight W/O Sliding?

Recommended Posts

Slow-motion video reveals that my upper body slides toward the target on my downswing, right from the transition.  I know it's because the only way I "know" how to get my weight/pressure transferred to my lead foot is to get my center of gravity (i.e. torso) over that lead foot.  But this produces a slide.  When I concentrate on keeping my head and shoulders back behind the ball throughout the downswing until contact, my weight ends up hanging back on my back foot and I hit the ball off my back foot.

Any good tips, videos etc. to help me figure out how to get pressure/weight on front foot in the downswing without sliding my upper body toward the target?

There could be another issue that is causing your inability to properly weight shift. It could be something with the clubhead movement such that to hit the ball solid you stay back.

Maybe moreso this one...

Also, I recommend starting a My Swing thread and posting a down the line and face on video.

This is good advice. Sounds like you may already have some video. So, should be easy.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Two thoughts from a golf newb (who's been doing a lot of "off-season" training and a lot of golf swing mechanics study):

1. Are you sufficiently grounded?  Getting your feet "in the ground" as much as you need?

Some of us need a lot of ground force to stay balanced and centered. Others seem to do just fine with not so much.

2. Are you perhaps overdoing the weight shift thing?

The transition should be just a little hip move target-wards, not a major movement. I don't even think of it as a "weight shift," per se, but more a slight "ground force shift."

The purpose is three-fold: To shallow the club a bit, to help prevent an OTT move, and to add some unwind torque.  Yes: All with that one little move :)

After many years of playing golf I finally understood the importance of "keep a steady head". It is definitely possible to shift your weight to your left foot without moving your head. It has helped mi enormously to have more precision at impact. Look at Fred Couples. His head has zero movement throughout the swing with the driver.
