as of now i have the Taylormade R5 three wood and have really been noticing that i am not hitting it quite the distance that i need, lately i have been hitting my 19* hybrid as far as my 15* 3-wood
so, my question is, what is the best overall 3-wood?
-Best out of the rough
-Best off the deck (fairway)
-Best distance
**forgiveness is also somewhat important to me because i know that certain titleist 3-woods have enormous distance but are damn hard to hit off the deck...
thanks for the help

I love the Cleveland Hi-Bore 3 wood. It has awesome distance of the tee and is very easy to get airborne of the deck. I was not expecting to get this going into GolfGalaxy but after trying the various Titleist models and Taylormade models, this was the easiest to hit in all situations.

even though I use a Burner 3 wood (my gf's parents got it for me for my b-day last year), I've been dying to pick up a Tour Edge Exotics XCD 3 wood.... the CB2 was amazing..I used my friend's CB2 last year and was cracking 250 like it was nothing....truly and awesome club.

What do you guys think about the Nike fairway woods.

Right now I don't carry a 3 wood, I just hit the driver off the deck when I'm 220+. But I'm thinking about adding one to the bag.

I love the taylormade burner very easy to hit off the deck, I get like 235-240 from the fairway(I only drive 260)

From the tee its like the same, easy to hit

rough, depends on the lie but usually i wont hit a 3 wood out of the rough

I keep hunting for one of these on ebay - my Warbird 5 wood is immense, so to get a 3 or 3+ would be ideal!

I went through this decision last year (replacing 3 Wood). I tried out quite a few three woods, and I'll break down what I thought about the ones I remember most.

Callaway XHot - Incredibly long, ten yards further than others, but incredibly hard to hit off the deck if you ask me. Great from the tee, hard off the turf if it isn't a "fluffed" lie.

Cobra Speed 3 - Straight and fairly long, but again basically a backup driver, not good from the turf.

Nike Sasquatch 3W - Nasty duck hook with this club. If I remember right 7 or 8 out of 10 were nasty, nasty duck hooks. Could have had a draw bias or wrong shaft for me or something, but not good results.

Titleist 904f2 - *Winner for me* Great off the tee, nice boring ball flight for into the wind. Easy to get off the turf (I'm a 10 hcp so it shouldn't too bad for you either). Easy to work (unlike the clubs with offset).

That's my breakdown, hopefully it helps, if not you, hopefully somebody, but I would just go to a store and grab a half dozen 3w's and start cracking balls and see what you like. That's the best way to do it.

Probably partial in my answer here, but the 906F2 is second to none. The Burner 3 wood was too big for me to hit off the deck and the Nike (all Nikes, for me, for some reason) was about 30 yards shorter than a normal 3 wood.

It's not the most forgiving club out there, but I'd sooner give up my little toe than my 3 wood.

I'll be a homer as well. The Mizuno F-60 is fantastic. Great from the tee and off the deck. I don't really use it in a lot of rough (the rough where I usually play isn't thick grass so much as it is unmowed, patchy natural grasses and weeds), but it can handle odd lies and is heavy enough to go get a ball.

I love the smaller-ish head on it and the smooth, all black crown (no alignment mark). But it is quite forgiving for a small/mid-sized fairway wood. Several months ago we had a thread on the F-60, and several commenters noted that it is very similar to the 906F2 but much more forgiving. I've only hit the 906 in a shop and can't really offer an informed opinion on that, except to say that the comparison sounds about right.

Good luck.

Tour Edge Exotics XCD - I also vote for that one, recently hit a bunch of 3-woods and this by far was my favorite, great weight, great feel, and could get it up in the air to land soft. However, they are very $$$.

I just hit it yesterday...i was a HUGE fan of the CB2...this one feels even better... too bad it costs more than most drivers on the market!

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
