Any one know where I can get stats for PGA players, specifically their average score from say 150 yards. Need to settle an argument where guy tells me his dad can play in low 70s while only driving ball ball off the tee 160 yards. He has an excellent short game in fairness but I'm thinking not PGA standard. I'm firmly in the long game camp. You can't shoot low consistently unless you driving it long, certainly longer than 160

I simply searched for "PGA tour stats" and ended up here, scoring with regard to par from 125 to 150 yards.  There lots of other stats available

He could… if he's playing pretty short tees. I mean, they might have to be 5200 yards or so, but he could.

Sorry, what has this to do with 'Tour stats'? If the idea is that you have to be a PGA Tour pro level short game to shoot low 70s driving it 160ish, then you may be overestimating the difficulty in doing so playing super short tees as @iacas mentioned.

Obviously I don't know the course/courses your friend is taking about but we have quite a few super seniors (70+) at my home course who do just that from super short tees (5,400 yards). There's only one par 4 over 300 yards. Majority average 260ish. The two par 5s are less than 400 yards. From the short tees the margin of error in keeping the ball in play is super wide. Additionally they don't hit hard enough to hit big hooks and slices.  They don't 'throw darts' but instead run up the ball on the green or around it all day. Not terribly hard.

Been told these are courses are all 6000+ so assuming most par 4s are 300+  and the par 5s are 500+. When I hear BS I have to call it out. This guy needs to be packing a game equal to or better than most guys in the bottom half of the 150-175 RTP stats to be shooting the scores I'm being asked to believe. Didn't use the keyword RTP when I was googling. Thanks @DaveP043 for that 🙂👍

I play a 7000 yard course… that has tees at 4700.

I can say I've seen some of the older gents at the club I play shoot in that range and from time to time a bit better.  Granted the super senior tees are only 4,400 yards and the course itself is just over 6,250 from the tips so its not a long course.  Also the greens are not super tricky so someone who can get close and some of those guys I play with can throw darts from 100 yards in for up and down pars.  Being short off the tee - say his par 4's are 300yds (160 off the tee, leaves 140 in - if he's like some I know, he can likely do driver off the deck with good accuracy, say for a nGIR 10yds out, he chips /putts consistently close and has kick in par).

For me, the operative phrase is "can play" - which says is capable but likely not carding it round after round.  Its like me saying I shoot in the upper 70's - one would presume that I am "saying" I am a solid single digit handicap, sub-80 player.  To which I am definitely not but I have ventured in the upper 70's several times over the past year - but that is not a consistent upper-70's.

Of course he can score in the low 70's in a really short course driving it that short. But the course rating is going to be in the 60's so is not like he can call himself a scratch player.

A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole.

Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80.

I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
