Sorry if this is off topic, but what's the ruling here:

Looks like a ball at rest moved by an outside influence.  Replace the ball on the spot, estimate the spot if its not known.  Rule 9.6.  If the original ball isn't immediately available, use another ball.

This happens all the time at my home course. We have a certain type of bird that eat the eggs and newborns of another type of bird. Sometimes they confuse golf balls with this eggs so they pick them up and fly away. Off course we are allowed to put another ball in play without penalty were we think the stolen ball was originally resting.

I once had my ball picked up and taken away by a fox on the first fairway, in an interclub match.  Apparently its a pretty common occurrence, we all knew how to handle it.

    • @dennyjonesand I are planning to stay in the Poland, OH area Friday night.  If any want to get together for dinner and/or drinks let us know. We are not sure exactly where we will stay or what time we will get there but if we can hook up with any of you it would be fun.
    • Yes, this was a competition for local golf professionals, so I knew he was at minimum a pretty competent player.  I also asked what kind of shot he needed to play, if he had wanted to go steeply down it could have altered my thinking.  But he needed a pretty level angle of attack to get the ball up, and have it stop near the hole.  Given those factors, and the depth of the grate below the ball, there really was no possibility that the grate would interfere with his swing.
