Hi all, I'm new here -- looks like a neat place...

I've been a long time fan of Callaway for my woods only (play Mizunos for my irons which work out well for me).

Anyway I had something very strange happen recently. Bought a new Callaway X460 driver (9 degree stiff). First time out after about 5 hits it started sounding funny and there was a rattle inside of it when you shake the club. This was the day before a golf trip to Scottsdale. Took it back that night and swapped it out for another one, figured it was just a defective one.

After a few rounds with the SECOND new driver the same thing happened again. A rattle when you shake the club and it sound funny when you hit it.

I just took it back and got my money back. I am totally baffled that this happened twice in a row within 2 weeks of each other. The price dropped to $150 at a local store for the same club and as pissed off as I am at Callaway right now, I'm actually still considering it at that price point. Basically I'm looking for the best driver I can get for $200 or under. $250 and up just gets too pricey for me for a single club that I tend to slice anyway.

Anyway, has this happened to anyone else with their Callaway driver? Is this a consistent problem with their quality control (where has it gone)? I'm skeptical to give them another shot after this madness. Should I look at another brand?

Well I don't have an X460, but I've had my FT-5 for over a year and have had no problems with it. (The durability at least :D)

Call Callaway customer service. I've read that it's very good and perhaps they can answer your questions.

If you want a new driver, try buying separate components and having it assembled. You can probably get exactly what you are looking for plus assembly for $200.

I've had the exact same problem, but not with a callaway Driver. With my sasquatch about half a years use, it started making a different sound. And could hear a little rattle. I was ready to exchange after trying both of the drivers. But then decided to stick with my broken one. After hitting it a bunch of rounds, it was gone.

it was all in my head.

I assure you this is not in my head. There is something that breaks off inside the club and it makes a rattle when you shake it. My 2 year old was starting to think it was a toy.

You mean buy a Callaway head and do the components separate? Where would I purchase these components?

It may be pieces of dried excess epoxy from the shaft tip.....then again...it may be something worse.

My old Taylor Made driver is doing the same thing right now.

My TM R7 460 did it after 2 weeks - was told it was epoxy, and applying a heat gun to the heade melts it and it fixes itself in place again. Told them after only 2 weeks that was BS so they were going to send to TM for repair/replacement. This wouldn't fit with timescales as I was moving home, so the shop exchanged it for something else.

I reckon you give them another go - you have a warranty remember, so keep swapping if it keeps happening. The good thing is that if it happens after Callaway have no more, they will most likely give you a new club... From my experience working in golf retail, they have the best customer service going.

This is what the sales guy said when I returned it -- thought it was epoxy or something. Still, it shouldn't do this...

I have a buddy that has a FT-3 (Or the original FT, can't remember) and his has a rattle right now. He's had it for like 3 years so it isn't brand new like yours, but he's had some problems as well.

That's a bummer -- I would be pissed if I paid $400 ish for a club and it's done after 3 years.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
