lordhampster - you can always manually advance the GL. The defaults are not locked into, they're just starting points, AFAIK, but keep in mind: 40 yards is like a mile to these things. It can easily differentiate.

ardman - if you never wanted to dl any new courses, you could probably quit the subscription. GL has some kind of automatic feed thing, where new versions of courses already on your computer are automatically dl'd. Not sure if your subscription would have to be active, though.

I just got my GL last night. Setup could not have been easier. They had all the courses that I play within my general area, even my dad's out in upstate NY. I dl'd 27 so far, put 20 on the unit. I wanted to get up at the crack this morning and go play just to try it out, but the body wasn't willing.....:)

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

thanks,

Another question: What's the diff between the GL 2007 and 2008 version aside from the $100 price difference on Amazon?

I'm a huge Garmin fan and have had probably about 10 different Garmin units over the years.

Honestly, many new GPS units share the same high-sensitivity chipset and so in GPS performance are darn close. I don't know what skycaddie uses though, but to me it looks like the GolfLogix8 is just a special firmware running on an eTrex H.

Anyway, the reason I chose the GolfLogix over the skycaddie is I entered every single course I've ever played on and they were all in there. Skycaddie was missing several courses I play regularly.

I also like reading all the reports of how fast GolfLogix can get courses mapped that are requested. I guess the huge advantage of high-res satellite photo mapping is they can make super accurate maps from the home office without having to send somebody out.

[QUOTE=Corgidog;165168]

My firend submerged his GL for 15 minutes with no ill effects. I did not email him back to find out why he would need this feature but ok. I guess I can envision a situation where it falls in the water near a drop but it seems like

One of the selling points of the GL is waterproofing so while it was under warranty he wanted to determine whether GL's claims were true. He actually was more concerned about using the device in the rain and clearly it passed the test.

hello everyone i am new to this board but i have had some experience with the sg-5.

as far as functioning on the course i have no complaints, it has always been extremely accurate. i play with a guy who uses one or those Bushnell lasers, and my sg-5 is just as accurate. i usually move the cursor on the I-green feature to the approximate pin location on the green and am always accurate within a yard to the actual pin distance. we have tested it extensively with a laser and have found it to be shockingly accurate.. that being said my friend has the original sg2 and it is not that accurate, also when i was researching before i bought mine, i found out that the sg 3 + 4 work on a completely different system than the new sg5 + sg2.5 (sg 5 + 2.5 are basically the same unit, one is a little bigger due to the larger color screen). you don't really want to buy a 2-3 or 4, if you get one get the 2.5 or 5. (i got my sg5 on ebay new for 320.00))

the course mapping is very good, just about everything you need a yardage to is in there, my only complaint is that i wish you could filter out some of the regular targets that you don't really need, (ex: the fw bunker on that par 5 that is 100yards in front of the tee box) but it's not hard to navigate.

as for the price of membership, if 20.00 per year is a concern for you, your prob playing the wrong sport

i do have to say that the customer service with sky caddy is not winning any awards, i had a small cosmetic issue with mine out of the box, and i sent it to them for repair. they said they couldn't find a problem with it, so i just fixed it my self.. anyway sorry for the long post, i hope this helps..

I'm lovin' the GolfLogix big time, its so nice to stop flying over the darned green!

The only problem is, now I need it to tell me the windspeed aloft. :) I tend to hit very high shots and the wind coming off lake erie was robbing me of 10 yards the other day. :/

are these things allowed in amateur tournaments?

Typically yes. They can be allowed - and usually are from what I've seen - by local rule.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

One of the selling points of the GL is waterproofing so while it was under warranty he wanted to determine whether GL's claims were true. He actually was more concerned about using the device in the rain and clearly it passed the test.

I'm thinking of acquiring a golf GPS and this is seems to be a necessary feature for golfers who walk and have the unit attached to the bag instead of the person. Waterproof and water resistant are different things.

Now for the questions: Does anyone extensively use their GPS on cloudy and/or wet days ala Pacific Northwest. What company and model and how well (or not) does it work? Does Skycaddie have a virtual hands off feature? GolfLogix does and I think Skycaddie does from what I have read but I'm not sure. What I'm trying to accomplish is get yardages from shot to shot and hole to hole without touching it. I don't mind occasionally doing so but I don't want to have to have it part of my pre-shot routine other than looking at it if that's what I want. Has anyone owned both companies GPS'? I'm interested in opinions from those who used both all the way from PC setup and use as well as on the golf course. This might not be possible since they ain't exactly cheap but you don't know if you don't ask. Thanks.

Golf Logix is essentially a custom software running on a Garmin Etrex H unit. As with the Etrex H, the Golf Logix is waterproof up to 1 meter under water. Truely water proof. I have an Etrex unit for Geocaching and I have had that unit underwater while canoeing. No problems. A little rain won't bother it a bit.

As for hands off, for the most part my Golf Logix requires little interference from me. Sometimes it will think I've moved on to the next hole if I'm close to the tee area of the next hole, all it takes to get back on track is to scroll down one (previous hole) or up one (next hole). Thats all the interaction that is required. I'd say 95% of the time I don't have to do anything with it. So far I've been very happy and they've had every course I've ever played mapped.

I just purchased a Sky Caddy 2.5 the other day, and played my first round with it today. I was highly impressed....it really helped a lot. I am sure the Golf Logix is just as good though. I went with the sky caddy cause they had more of my local courses, and they walk the course to map it.

Well for better or for worse I am going GolfLogix. Two things stood out for me. The unit is waterPROOF and it seems simpler to use. SkyCaddie might be just as simple to use but I can't take a chance that water resistant is good enough when walking in the Pacific Northwest. At least two rounds a year I get rained on. At least once a year it's raining hard enough to completely soak things. The Intelligreen feature of Skycaddie certainly looks interesting and if they ever make a waterproof model I might look at them again. I also got the Caribiner attachment but that now has me wondering if current walking bags have a built in holder for GPS'. Mine is going on 6 years. Man, it's a never ending buying process.

I've had my Golf logix since December and I think it is great . I've used it on about 30 courses in 6 or 7 States plus 20 rounds on my home course and have never had a problem. It always picks up a signal even on overcast and rainy days. It is very accurate and simple to use. I get 4-5 rounds per set of batteries. One of the guys in my regular foursome has a skycadie. They are equally accurate on my home course (never more than 2 yards apart in their readings anywhere on the course.) It is extremely simple to download courses and they have almost every course in the US available

Golflogix has great customer service. I just switched computers. My new computer uses the Vista 64 bit operating system. When I first went to the Golflogix site to download a new course I couldn't get it to work. I sent an e-mail to golflogix. The next day I got an e-mail and a phone call from them saying that there were some problems with the 64 bit Vista OS and they were working on a fix. A couple of days later they called me and downloaded a new driver for Vista 64 and I am back in business.

Also works great on Mac OSX which is what I use.

Thursday I was on a golf course, and I found a sprinklerhead that was marked 115. I stood right on top of it, pulled out Golf Logix, and it told me 115 to the center of the green. I was impressed.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
