Yea baby! He finally did it, he won on tour for the first time and it was The Players Championship. This is a very big win for him and I hope to see A Lot more of him.

After him winning, how do you expect him to play in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines?

mate if he can putt well for 4 days at torrey pines, i think he has a huge chance of winning. he is a great ball striker, just confidence is what lets him down. also his attitude nees to change. he comes across to me as a bit of a savage. the spitting in the cup incidence is an example of that.

The Players was his 7th PGA Tour win - unless you meant his first win this season. I expect him to do poorly in the U.S. Open unless he putts much better than he normally does.

I was happy to see Sergio pull of the Player's win. It seemed to have relieved him of a lot of pressure leading up to the event. He also showed a lot of class, some humbleness, and a good sense of humor during his post match T.V. interview.

I believe he was using an old putter from back in the days when he had more success. His putting is red hot now, and that coupled with a great ball striking skill gives him, IMHO, a great chance in the upcoming U.S. Open.

Um I don't know if I would put Sergio's putting in the "Red Hot" category yet. He putted well for once. I hope he can continue.

Didn't Sergio have something like 20 more putts than Goydos? (Think that was the player who came second)

His ball striking is awesome, as good as if not better than Tigers, if his putting was as good he would be a contender for No. 1 in the world.

Yeah, I think it was 18. He didn't putt greatly. If he did, he would be at -46237906363 with how many greens he hits.

Goydos also had a lot of hole outs from off the green so a few 0-putts will help lower your putting average

Sergio looked better over the ball than he has in a long time.
I usually feel like I have to pee while he fiddles around trying to summon the courage to stroke a putt.
That's not a put down - it's like watching me play.
Oh, that's a put down.
Anyway, he seems more determined than confused and he'll do well if that keeps up.

Best, Mike Elzey

Not quite.

Though Sergio seems to have good weeks, those are off-set apparently by some pretty horrible weeks. On his good weeks, perhaps he can hang with Tiger, but even a good week requires four straight days of good ballstriking. And we've seen how often that happens - once a decade or so for Sergio? Comparing their stats, we see the following (their ranks in the PGA Tour stats, in order, are listed): 2008 (Driving Accuracy, GIR, Proximity to the Hole): Sergio: 113, 8, 74 Tiger: 137, 1, 16 2007 (Driving Accuracy, GIR, Proximity to the Hole): Sergio: 148, 105, 74 Tiger: 152, 1, 3 2006 (Driving Accuracy, GIR, Proximity to the Hole): Sergio: 129, 37, 93 Tiger: 139, 1, 1 Averages (Driving Accuracy, GIR, Proximity to the Hole): Sergio: 130, 50, 80 Tiger: 143, 1, 7 So... yeah. Sergio isn't the ball-striker everyone remembers him to be. 50th in GIR (average) and 80th in proximity to the hole (average)? Ick.

Not quite.

Can't argue with that

I'm surprised it's so poor, but I suppose when your under pressure to get the ball close because of poor putting you can put too much pressure on your approach shots, maybe?.

Some nice statistics.

The commentators and media always say he is one of the best ball strikers out there. I guess they're referring to the art of hitting a ball cleanly and with power rather than the actual result. Not all the top pro's hit the ball as well as Sergio.

I hope this win can spur him on - automatic qualification for the Ryder Cup and threatening to win a major. Harrington may have opened the European floodgate!

The one thing Sergio needs he seems to lack and it's the most important -- consistency. But that's not necessarily an earth shattering epiphany.

Personally, I don't think I'll ever warm up to Sergio, just my feelings. Snotty little rich kid comes to mind when I see him.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
