I am consistently striking the heel. Today, I shanked about three 9 irons, and I looked at the face of my new driver, on the first three shots with it the ball marks were ALWAYS on the heel-center side of the club. I don't what to do. My dad already said I look really far from the ball. I thought that was it. I'm not sure...any tips?

3 things i do that causes a shank.

1. feet pointed too far right of target combined with an outside-in swing=shank.

2. taking the club too much inside on the takeaway=shank.

3. lunging and/or sliding on the downswing.

make sure your not doing any of those mistakes.

Standing too far from the ball can actually be worse as you might move towards the ball unconciously if your aware you're too far away. Better to correct the setup and stand the correct distance. Try some half and 3/4 swing with a correct setp and see if you're hitting it better.

I'm going to try these. Because I have been trying to swing more from the inside, and that may be it. My dad said I do have a tendency to slide into the ball, or lunge as you say...I'll try to get my lower body more quiet today.

Thanks for all the tips.

That's probably the side of the club that gets to the ball first.

I can do that by coming over the top so badly that I'm locked up.

Today, I played my best round of the year. Consistently hit everything solid. Hit a lot of G.I.R. and didn't shank ANY shots. I focused on the things mentioned in this thread. Hopefully they'll go away for good!

Thx for the help.

I hope it's over, too. I don't even like it when I remember that the word exists.

That's a hilarious. One thing that can bring out the compassion in the even the most hardened hearts... commiserating over the shanks! Yeah i've been suffering with these bad boys over the past 2 years and to be honest I was standing too far from the ball. Yes from time to time I'd slide towards the ball, come from too far inside, all the usual suspects, but the main culprit was my setup. It looks good, but in actuality there was too much room between the butt end of my club and my belt buckle. Now that there is just over a fists width (with thumb sticking out a bit), I'm much more balanced in my backswing and the shank is virtually a memory... but not a fond one!

I hope it's over, too. I don't even like it when I remember that the word exists.

I know I am a much much worse player than you but standing to far away from the ball def. creeps into my game from time to time. Then I subconsciously adjust on teh downswing and bad things happen. I then just really focus on addressing the ball Ill even line up 2-3 times and step away until it feels right.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
