Putting ball

When playing socially I don't mind people changing balls. I've seen people hit hard balls of the tee, then use a Pro V1 for the approach... I don't mind.

There are pros that have been unable to finish tournament rounds because they ran out of balls and their playing partners played a different brand.

From what I remember it was very hot and to lighten the bag the caddie only had 6 balls in the bag. Through scuffing and balls to kids and loosing a couple the pro ran out of balls. Boy was the pro pissed. not sure if the caddie was fired.

I'm with you. If we aren't playing for money I don't care what you do as long as you play fast.

No, if i'm going to bend down to pick up my ball it might as well be from the hole.

See now THAT I am against - that would require you to touch the ball in the fairway or whatever...and I'm pretty sure the only time you can pick up your ball is if you are on the green (other than lift clean and place or if an official deems it ok because of a ruling)...besides - the topic of this thread is 'putting ball'

Just so I'm perfectly clear, this is not a general USGA rule but may be imposed by the committee for a specific tournament, correct? Nothing illegal in a general round of golf switching brands / types of balls between holes?

A) You can never switch the ball (even for the same make and model) during play of a hole unless it's "damaged" (and the odds of that happening are slim to none).

B) In tournament play, as a condition of competition, the committee may enact a rule that says you must play the same kind (make/model) of ball the entire time. In A, switching between holes is fine... though if you ever play in tournaments, you should get used to playing one ball.

The "one ball" rule is usually only in effect in top amateur events and all professional events. It would be listed on a local rules sheet if it was in effect.

Honestly for me I don't really care what you do that is against the rules, within reason.

The large majority of the people I play with wouldn't benefit in any way shape or form by switching balls, weather off the tee, on their approach or on the green. Trust me, it's not the ball, the fact I tell them the yardage or even what club I used that is going to make them break 90.

I am going to give high handicapper any advantage they want to make it more fun because I know as soon as golf isn't fun for them anymore then I lose a playing partner. I see it like teaching some one new how to golf or taking you child out and play with, you want it to be fun for them so if and when they get good enough they understand the rules and why they are there.
