Hey everybody. I've been lurking for a couple weeks - I'm on a few random forums, and I was very happy to find one about golf that's actually active... some others I saw only rarely got new posts.

I used to golf a bit in high school (not competitively though), but then completely stopped during undergrad. I've been out of school for a year, and have been golfing probably 3 times a month for the last five or six months. I'll be starting law school in August, so I'm trying to get in as many rounds as possible before I'm living off student loans - although I'll still try and get out of the library every once in a while to golf and "relax."

My golfing buddies are all better than I am, but it doesn't really bother me - I just play my own game. I try not to get frustrated, but I do have a blow-up hole every once in a while. I recently upgraded from my 10 year old Spalding irons to last year's Taylormade R7's... I've played 1 round with them, and it's a huge improvement. My driver's also a TM, the R5 draw. I'm thinking that at this point, I might as well pick up a used TM 3-wood to round it out, haha.

That's about all I can think of for an introduction... I look forward to picking your brains to help me get better!

Welcome, man. Where in O.C. do you play?

As for my usual groups, I used to be the worst. Now there's only one I can't consistently shoot under. Yet.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I don't really have a "home" course yet - we've been playing the courses on the OC Golf Trail card. Last weekend was Black Gold, this weekend we'll be playing the Aliso Creek 9-hole course twice (we needed a slightly cheaper course this weekend, haha).

As for my usual groups, I used to be the worst. Now there's only one I can't consistently shoot under. Yet.

Well, I'm regularly only a couple strokes behind one guy. The other guys are a good number of strokes away. If I can improve that much over the summer, I'd be ecstatic.

By the way, if anyone has a suggestion of a good, not-so-expensive course that I could play regularly (maybe join a club, if I find that I can make time during law school), I'd appreciate input.

Actually, I'll find out tomorrow if we have an open spot for this little 9 hole this weekend... if we do, I'll be sure to give you a heads up.

    • You get a penalty stroke because your local committee didn't do their job, they didn't address the specific conditions using the tools available to them within the Rules.  The rulemakers contemplated just this situation, bunkers being so filled with Temporary Water that they're unplayable.  The only way to address it "fairly" is to allow free relief outside the bunker, and they do NOT want to allow that on an everyday basis.  So they write the rules as it is, and allow the Committee to override the normal rule in the rare instance where the bunker really is full.  That's what your "local league" does, they invoke Model Local Rule F-16, which treats flooded bunkers as both GUR and as General Area.  Relief from GUR in the General Area allows relief in the General Area (i.e. outside the re-defined bunker).  Its quite a logical way to approach a relatively rare situation. Separately, consider your concern about temporary Water in the fairway.  I've seen situations in relatively level fairways where the Nearest Point of Complete Relief  from Temporary Water is 30 or 40 yards away, further from the green, even in the rough.
    • There you go, @yungbuck6. Your hips aren’t really shifted forward and your head tips back. The camera angle isn’t good so what looks like hip slide could actually just be extension towards the ball.
    • But there's more to weight shift than just where you finish. How your weight transfers throughout the swing matters too.  But you're saying you can see it better than a device that can measure it? Got it.  Yeah I'm good here, good luck to whoever tries to coach you.
