I just saw on Golf Channel that Adam Scott has a broken pinkie on his right hand, but he's going to attempt to play the U.S. Open regardless.

I think Adam's got an interlocking grip. Seems to me a broken pinkie is bad with that grip. If he has an overlap, that might be "okay" to play with... no? Yes?

Anyway, I'm guessing he doesn't make it through perhaps even the first round, and maybe not even some of the practice rounds. If so, that'd leave Tiger and Phil as an awkward twosome.

If you get it in a brace, it shouldn't be too bad. All he needs to do is stabilize it.

During his round? I'm not sure a "brace" is going to work for playing golf in two or three days.

Id say this has a WD written all over it. Its not only the grip that may slip, or be to painful to hold in place, its the contact that will jar the broken bone. Not good - duh, right?

I am officially DVRing the first round to see Tiger and Phil as a two-some (potentially) that sould be seriously uncomfortable viewing pleasure.

If it's just a hairline fracture, he might able to swing. But I agree, broken right pinkie + interlocking grip seems like trouble. One swing in the deep rough could get that yelping pretty quickly.

I just saw on Golf Channel that Adam Scott has a broken pinkie on his right hand, but he's going to attempt to play the U.S. Open regardless.

With the right hand the middle and ring finger are the ones that apply the most pressure to the grip (in most tour pro grips), so I don't think it is going to be that big a deal. Like another poster said their might be a problem if he makes bad contact and sends a jarring action up the shaft. With all that being said I can't say I have any experience playing with a broken pinky (I've never broken a bone in my body), but I'd have to think that the right pinky (which for most pros just floats) isn't overlly imperative to the golf swing.

I agree that he will probably WD. Not the course to be playing 4 days with a hand injury. That is ok, it will just give Tiger & Phil more one on one chit chat time. I will be there on Thursday and hope to hear where they will be going to dinner together that night! Too bad Vijay is not in the threesome, there would be snow in June.

how did he do it? it's frustrating because he has been promising to win majors but he either happens to get injured or loses form etc. he is overdue for a major win.

I think it depends on the grip. Again, an interlocking grip is going to put a lot more pressure on the thing than an overlapping grip.

One swing from the rough, even a simple pitch shot from near the green, is going to be all he needs to a) have to grip quite strongly, and b) send "jarring" waves up the shaft. It's the U.S. Open, after all. He's not going to hit 14 fairways and 18 greens.

Wrong thread. We're talking about Adam Scott here.

The guy's best finish in a U.S. Open is T21, and he's barely cracked the top ten in other majors (T9, T8, T3, in calendar order). I can't name a time when I thought Adam was "really" in contention. Can you? Best player without a major? He's in the discussion, if not first in line... at least Sergio's finished high in a few and went into a playoff in one.

Anyone know how he did it?

Adam Scott isn't first or second on my list of Aussies with a decent shot at winning this year's U.S. Open. I was hoping for a good finish from him, but there are others with more pedigree.

As for his injury, there is no way it doesn't have an effect on his game. Thinking about it will affect things enough to mess his week up. He was going to be my disappointment before I heard about the injury, but I'll leave him alone now. Like others have said, he may not even make it through the practice rounds.

Considering the golf grip is the first thing you learn when taking up the game being directly proportional to its importance, I think Mr. Scott will be lucky to be competitive next week.

Now knowing what having a broken bone is all about, and using an interlocking grip myself, I see no way that someone could play an interlocking grip with a broken right pinky finger. Overlap, maybe? But the switch from interlock to overlap is an odd feeling to try and deal with for everyday golf, let alone the US Open...

If he can not play I hope he does not even try so a deserving alternate can play in the Open.I think he would be doing a disservice to the game just to try and then walk off after 9 holes.

I can't imagine Scott playing well, if, at all. Look at Phil, last year. He had the wrist issue and wore a brace. It did not work out well for him. He would wince on certain shots from the fairway, let alone that look of pain when he was in the rough.

I don't think Scott should compound the issue by playing. To compensate for the finger, it's possible that he may try to make adjustments on his swing or grip, resulting in poor play. Plus, there is a lot of golf, left, including two more majors.

i dont play US open standard golf, but i am playing with a broken/or just busted index finger atm. (Rugby Injury that i dont want to sit in casualty for four hours for them to strap up.) its not that hard, yet i dont see him or Tiger being competitive.

Now We just need big phil to get injured and a brit might win!

According to a couple of reports I've read/heard the incident happened two weeks ago. If that is true then I think the issue may be less of a factor than most people are thinking. We have to wait and see what happens happens with Scott early in the week to see how much of an effect it will have on his ability to play solid shots.

    • DAY 5:  Range session (60 min) -- GRASS IS OPEN FOR 1st TIME THIS SEASON! 😍
    • Day 29: Did about 20 minutes of putting indoors while leftovers were heating up, and then hit some balls after dinner for another 10 minutes before it got dark.
    • Hardly. Tiger’s stats far exceed those of Nicklaus’ other than the ‘Majors.’ I put majors in quotes because several of Jack’s major wins were grossly weak in depth of field.    Im sure you’re aware that major wins as the sole criteria was Jack’s idea only after he realized he wasn’t gonna be able to surpass Snead’s total wins. Which of course was Jack’s criteria originally. Jack also moved the goal posts by not counting Amateur championships after Tiger won three to Jack’s two.
    • Day 126 - Stack session and some divot board work.
    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
