So I took my first lesson today... Overall it went well, Basically worked on grip, where the weight should be in my stance and trying to get the feel of using my shoulders to start the swing not the arms..
Everything definitely felt awkward but Im sure it will help more in the long run
So far so good... now i cant wait to get back to the range and practice!

The practise part is probably more important then the leasons themselves.

This coming from some one who basically has a self build swing and only taken 4 leasons in my whole life. To practise the drills your instructure gives you, is where the improvement comes from. Also don't take too many leason too close together. Engrain what your instructor has taught you before going back to get something new to work on. You don't want to work on too many things at once. I would say a leason a month is about right.

Maybe you should've listened to your English teacher.

Congrats on the first lesson. Work hard on the things you were taught during this lesson and keep at it. In my experience after a lesson I feel great, then it goes downhill a little before coming back.

I highly recommend grabbing a club at home as you watch TV or something else and just practice the grip. It takes a while for that to feel right and you don't want it to start reversing to your old habit. After a while the new grip will feel just right.

I have found the more awkward it feels, the more correct it is! Whenever my swing starts to feel "comfortable" I stop hitting the ball well.

I felt horribly awkward after my first lesson, almost two years ago. I didn't think I was taking the club back far enough. But I was hitting the ball far more consistently and didn't lose much distance. Second lesson, I got that distance back and kept the consistency. And my swing felt effortless.

With any change to how you play, such as a lesson, you have to accept that it's going to negatively affect you at first. It will feel weird. Your scores might even increase at first. You have to keep with it, and recognize it's a long term gain.

true that, good point shindig. Dont quit dude. It may take a million range balls, but the benefits will come.

congratulations. its great that your so pumped to getback out there.

i think the best thing you can do is keep going and try not to stop going to the lessons. after you starting to get more confident and your scores start dropping (after 6 months or so), start to back them off: once a week for 3 mths, once a fortnight for 3 mths, once a month for 3 mths, once every six months. great news!

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
