....The old MacGregor V-foil 1025's came in a combo set,...

They did indeed; can still pick them up cheap second hand. As for feel, they're awesome. I have the 1025Ms (muscleback/blade-type) and they're easy to hit and the strike feels gorgeous. Picked up an almost new set last year via eBay for ~$100

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I rarely have a need to hit any iron smaller than a 7, my 3, 4 and 5 look new as the day I got them. So, would a combo setup really be of any value?

if thats the case, probably not. all blades would be just fine imo

My 1st good set of clubs after my almost 40 year hitatus from golf was the 1025 combo set. Then I got a mixed set of Mizuno's, MP 60 & 32's. Those are now my b/u and winter set of clubs. I've reshafted the 1025's and gone mb all the way. You are correct, they are sweet and I like them better than the Mizuno's. LOL, and again you are correct, the price for a set of 1025's is just incedible. I don't think you can beat the quality at that price.

To me the 1025's feel a lot like the Niki VR blades, but thats just me. Play well.

Yeah. But I alternate between those and a few blades I've got. And if you read my AP2 review, you'll see they have the feel of blades.

Heh, this thread has expanded a bit since I checked a few days ago :P

How do you like the TaylorMade irons? I almost got a set, and am still pondering it. I saw your AP2 review. Thanks!

Follow up: I went in for a club fitting today. I hit a lot of clubs Callaway, Ping, Adams, Mizunos, Taylormade, Cleveland. I was there for a couple hours. It is amazing how different each club feels. In the end I liked the Ping i10, Mizzuno MP-57, Mizuno MP-52, and Taylormade Burners.

The person fitting me said the Mizuno's were coming out too low and recommended I not get those so that left me with the i10s and the Burners. They are both cavity back clubs and I was not really wanting to get CBs but, I must say, they felt very very smooth when I struck the ball.

Ultimately, I left empty handed. I could not see dropping $700 on clubs that were close to what I already had. My TA7s feel almost as good and the customizations are the same +1" and 2 deg up.

Thanks to all for the advice you gave me during this process.

you made the right decision

Thanks... $700 on lesons will serve me better then buying more GI clubs. Good news was I was striking the ball dead center 6 out of 10 swings. I don't know why I wasn't getting the ball up high enough. My club head speed was in the 82 - 85 range consistantly. Another good thing that came out of hitting the blades is I am no longer "afraid" of them. I thought I was striking them fairly well given my skill level. They are deffinantly on my list of things to buy at the begining of next season

Hi all,

A lot of you took the time to reply to this thread so I thought I would update it. I could not hold out any longer. I did get the lessons but I also went ahead and purchased the MP-52. I asked my instructor after a couple lessons and he said I should be fine with the 52's and that I really needed to go to a stiff flex shaft anyway. I Didn't know I was using regular flex but on my swing videos you can see my shafts doing the Schwarzenegger (Flexing wicked hard).

The specs are

MP-52
2* upright
standard loft
project X 6.0 shaft
DD2 Grips

This artical lost me at

OK, I don't necessarily agree with that but he makes some good points later. What we need to realize is that MOST golfers who are on the courses don't need to play an unforgiving club. If guys playing for a paycheck are getting help, why wouldn't most others do the same.

My son plays the MP-52's and I find them to be an excellent choice. I have hit them well but was still inconsistent. That's why I chose what I did when I bought this winter. I'd say if you put the work in with these sticks you won't be a 15 much longer.

Doc, The writer is not taking into account what a player WANTS to play. If the game is more enjoyable to a 30 handicap if he/she plays mp-33 then I say go for it. The best player in the world plays Nike clubs but that does not mean that Nike makes the best clubs in the world. So, just because 70% of the pros play CB doesn't mean you are an idiot if you don't play them. But, I am not a person that looks to the pros when I choose a club. I look to my fellow Joe average to see what he thinks.

I know I'd probably score better with more forgiving irons, but I truley feel I'll improve more not getting rewarded for poor swings. Aside from that, I ENJOY playing blades - no matter how much better my misses would be otherwise. PS - there's really little difference to me, as I've said before. Maybe 8 yards short/right on a miss rather than 5...

In summary: 99% of people probably would score better with cavity backs, but who cares. Play what you want, it's your bag. If all people cared about was scoring than most golfers would have given up already.

A mixed set is the best of both worlds. I dont see the advantage of using a blade bast the 7 iron.

I couldn't agree with you more; very good decision.

Shafts can make a big difference in feel, (depending on brand and if you step them--a good club fitter will know all of this), and some difference in trajectory.

Distance control and working the ball.

    • The angles look fine. Get as much light as you can on the area — you want the highest shutter speed you can get. Less blur.
    • Snap @ Tour Spoon! Birdied 11 yesterday. Hit a poor iron ,stopped on edge of bunker , pitch with my lob wedge landed about 6’ away and went in. Only 12 & 14 to go, long par5’s into the prevailing wind. Might be waiting a while although I did have about 15’ on 12 after the birdie on 11, didn’t miss by much.
    • Tested the Maxfli TourS yesterday. Compared to my former ball, the Titleist AVX, I got an extra 10 yards off the driver and half a club (5-7 yards) off the irons. The combined extra yardage from the driver and fairway wood meant that on par-5s where I usually hit an 8-iron third shot, I hit a PW. It's just a smidgen softer than the AVX and seems to spin well. Some of the reviews indicated a low ball flight, but I did not notice it. I also did not observe any problems with the paint quality, which was an issue with previous Maxfli models up to and including the U series.  My previous round I tested the Bridgestone E6, a two-piece ball with a different cover. It was OK; the same distance and feel as the AVX but with less spin.
    • Sad tale.  Both the A's and Raiders.  IMO, cities shouldn't be building stadiums for MLB/NFL teams.  But that's the world we live in.   DAY 3:  30-min range session with irons and wedges.  Working on follow thru -- no hooks! 🙂
    • Backswing: Body is responsible for taking the club around. Arms are responsible for making the club go up.  Downswing: The process is reversed. Weight Forward So, your arms need to do stuff. Set up to the ball. Do not raise your arms at all. Rotate your body as you would in the swing. You will notice your hands stay down near your right hip. So, how does the club get up? Your arms raise it up. You can't take your arms out of the swing. What you are describing might be more of a feel, but it also might not be correct.
