just a heads up for y'all. I just got back from Golfsmith.
They have $29.99 boxes of prov1 "practice" balls. The guy said the only difference is they're flawed print balls. there's no difference in the construction of the ball or anything else..just some letters are bold and others aren't.
oh, and the last thing, the balls say practice on them.

Why wouldn't you? - serious question from someone who has never played a tourney or ever intends to.

Dunno . I just can't fathom why a ball marked practice would be verbotten.

It's not on the approved list of golf balls. Why? Because performance characteristics aren't guaranteed to be within specs (the rules). Practice balls are fine. X-out balls are not.

Thanks for clearing that up. Appreciate it. I never played tourney golf, the closest is betting my brother a buck a stroke for the round.

Bought like 3 dozen of these at the local Dicks Sporting Goods....great deal. Never ever noticed a difference in play.....they look a I ran them against a cheese grater when I hit em with my wedges - just like the $45 ones do :)

Yeah, the guy at the store was telling my dad the Pro's use these on the driving ranges to gather their distances for each of their clubs. I wasn't sure how truthful it was though.

I just read an article or heard it on TGC, but it was about horrible rounds, one guy literally lost all his balls and ended up having to finish with range balls.

According to the USGA rules, I think you might be mistaken...I could be reading it wrong though...

Rule 5-1 Status of "X-Out" and "Practice" Balls Q. May I use an "x-out" ball or a ball stamped with "Practice" to play a round of golf? A. Our present policy provides that if the List of Conforming Golf Balls or the One Ball Condition is in effect, a practice or logo ball may be used provided the other markings on the ball (i.e., pole and seam) correspond exactly to a ball listing on the current List of Conforming Golf Balls. Balls labeled with “PRACTICE” or a circled “P”, are essentially treated as a logo ball (such as a Mickey Mouse emblem). A player's name stamped on the ball is also acceptable. However, the original ball markings (i.e., pole and seam markings) must be readable in order for a Rules Official to determine whether that ball is on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. X-Out balls are not permitted to be used in any competition in which the List of Conforming Golf Balls or the One Ball Condition is in effect. However, if neither of these Conditions are in effect, X-Out balls may be used because all balls are presumed to conform unless they have been tested and found not to conform or are obviously non-conforming (e.g., too small or too heavy). (See Decisions 5-1/4 and US/5-1/101).

You can use them in tournaments. They are USGA conforming.

I bought a box of new pro-v1s for $29.99 not including tax.

The well known company is California had a 20% off coupon on the internet and the store already was offer the Prov1s for a sale price of $39.99 so the cashier took the 20% off the sales price and I was able to buy a box for about $29.99

I play TM tp red / black XXX outs and on the box they say the balls are approved under USGA rules

it should say that on box, if it doesnt you may not be able to tee those bad boys up in a tourney

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.

    • Because you're twisting it to hold it open. Forearms, etc. shouldn't be all that tense at setup.
