I've been waffling about upgrading my equipment knowing that I could truly benefit from the newer technology but also knowing that the cash outlay will catch me much flack from the homefront. After reading the review of the Mizuno MP-57 Irons by AO and having read the one on the Titleist AP's I decided when I went by the local retailer that I would test drive them a bit today. Wow! What a significantly different feel than what I'm currently playing. I cannot adequately describe how the ball felt coming off the club faces. I hit a couple other clubs but neither came close to the feel the Titleist and Mizuno had nor did the numbers show it. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on one of these sets but I'm not sure what the deciding factor would be. I hate to leave it to looks but I'm not finding another factor to help choose. I hate gaudy look clubs and neither is that although the Mizuno is a bit cleaner looking. Anyway, just a bit of props to the staff for their hitting the nails on the heads. Hope to have one of these sets in the bag soon.

What Titleist's did you hit?
I'm going to assume AP's, everyone around here has a set, it seems.

Yeah, it was the AP1's.

Did you try the AP2's?

With your cap, the 2's would probably be a bit better. Are you leaning toward either set?

Erik and the other staff write amazing reviews. Their review on the Taylormade Z TP Wedge is what made me want to get one. Most reviews on the internet just describe the club, but has never been played by the writer.

I love how Erik and others actually play the club on the course, tells us what it does, and compares it to other of the same.

If only I could find an MP-57 review somewhere on this site...

And that is officially the stupidest thing i have ever said in my life.

Sorry Doctor, I have the sandtrap forum as my homepage so I never see the homepage of this site. Matter of fact thats the first time I've seen it. I always used the search thing to come up with reviews. That review just came out, I looked yesterday and didn't see anything Man i'm an idiot.

Have you tried them outside on a range? Ballflight should be an important factor. I can only imagine they'd be different. If you're considering the AP2's with the project x and the s300 in the mp57s

The AP1 is more like some of the MX clubs from Mizuno.

The AP2 is even, I would say, more forgiving than the MP-57. Either way, I don't know that you'd really want to compare AP1 to MP-57. If you're a 5.x handicap, the AP2 may suit you better.

So I assume you think the Mizuno is more congruent with the AP2? To be honest I really thought I'd try the AP2 but I just grabbed the AP1 and the first ball I hit was pure and I got excited right away! I really should have taken the time to hit both.

The AP2 is for lower handicappers.

The AP1 is for "aspiring" golfers. The MP line is for lower handicappers. The MX line is for higher handicappers. Those are generalizations, but you don't get to be a generalization without a fair amount of truth to it. We reviewed the AP2s, too...

The one thing that is a bit puzzling to me is which shaft to go with. I have heard so many different things with the Project X shafts, flighted or not, that I am not sure what to believe.

So go hit them. That's the answer to anything.

I get a bit annoyed at people asking questions like "what shaft should I get?" when "go hit them" is the answer every time. We don't know what your swing looks like, or your ballflight, etc. Go hit them.

Easier said than done. Our local retailers do not carry every combination of clubhead and shaft. Driving around to every retailer to find them is not cost effective either. Not all the manufacturers have demo days in our area.

Go hit them...good in theory. Appreciate your feedback.

Titleist pros should have a fitting cart. If they do, they have clubheads with different lies and various different shafts, all of which are interchangeable. Sure it'll just be the six-iron, but still...

And the Project X shaft is stock/standard in the AP2, so even if they taped up a set off the rack you should be fine to hit them.

I'm going to work on my dad and try to get custom fit for christmas this year on maybe the mp 57's. I have actually heard mixed reviews on those. Some reckon high cappers can play them and others say they are for low handicappers. But i spose the only way to find out is the hit 'em.

I'm looking at the 57's as well, or the 60's whichever I can find, they are almost the same. I think the 60's are more workable while the 57's are more forgiving.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
