Since I been the terrible driver all I use off the tee box is a 3-iron.Now the problem with the driver is that every time I hit either just duff it or hit it maybe 200 yards low with a right hook.I want to be able to hit it straight at least a constant 230-250

Could be that your lifting your hole body on the downswing due to trying to help the ball, but i agree with Thumper07,need to see it.

Since the driver is the longest club in the bag sometimes its the hardest to hit in the bag.

Take a lesson from a Pro.

take the club back slow and complete the back swing and start your downswing slowly in slow motion and concentrate on making contact instead of distance. It might help to choke up on the club to shorten the lenght of the shaft.

have fun and don't be afraid of any of your clubs in the bag including the driver.

Check your set up and ball postion.

For now, I would try choking up a bit on the club to effectively reduce the length of the shaft.

Tough to guess what you are doing. But make sure the ball is up in your stance, stay behind the ball through impact and power through it to the target. Keep right knee flexed during backswing. Maintain good posture throughout the swing.

These are my new "keys" to hitting the driver after seeing my swing on video, seems when I have these things in order lately my driving is pretty effective.

Has been hard though to remember everything at the same time!! lol

Like most people have been saying your setup it the first thing you should check. Below are picture of the pros at setup. Make note of their posture and ball position. From a posture position pay particular attention to: spine tilt from the face on view, and position of the shoulders, knees, and balls of feet in relation to one another from down the line.

Some of those guys up above stances are around shoulder width and a bit wider. Also, Phil seems more hunched over compared to Sergio.

I am inconsistent with driver too, when I forget the #1 law of golf.

Initiate the downswing by using your hips instead of the arms.

Just let your arms trail behind you and the clubhead will find the ball. Your arms muscles must be totally passive because they produce killer tension and you cannot control a clubhead moving at high speed anyway.

What is wrong with having a shoulder width, or slightly wider stance?

Phil and Sergio's posture may be slightly off (Phil tilted too far over the ball, and Sergio with too much knee flex), but they still aren't bad examples to use as reference. Below I've included Ernie Els and Retief Goosen down the line to provide a couple other models. Els is a little better angle (being a better camera angle). The camera angle plus the fact that Goosen isn't as tall as Els (and personal preference) leads him to have a little taller lower body posture (less knee flex).

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
