I have 13 clubs in my bag right. Going to add a 3-wood very soon and was looking into a LW but that would put me at 15 clubs. I want to keep my 3-iron for those 200 yard par 3's. My Ben Hogan Equalizer is a 47*, Ping PW is 50* and Ping SW is 57*. Maybe take the E out since my 9-iron is 120 and PW is 100.

With a 57* sand wedge, do you really need a lob wedge?

You tell me, I'm still fairly new to the game and have been playing flop shots with my SW. Not 100% sure if my SW is 57* since I have no way of measuring it and doubt Ping has the specs on there site anymore.

How good are you with 3-iron and how often do you use it on the course? Since you already have 19* hybrid I think you could remove the 3-iron. Choke down the hybrid if you need to go 3-iron distance. There you go, one spot for the 3-wood.

Ahhh! Gotcha. Well, I guess what I was trying to saw is "don't get hung up on the letter on the club." It's my understanding that the equalizer was Hogan's standard PW. And at 47*, that's about right. Your PW is pretty weak by today's standards, as most PWs are about 46* and most sand wedges are about 54*. (That's why some folks, like me, add a gap wedge. Mine is 50*). Most lob wedges are 58* or 60*. (After that, you get into Phil Mickelson wedge territory.) If you are hitting your PW 100 yards, then your SW is what, 80 yards? On a good day, I hit my LW between 75-90 yards (90 = full swing. 95 if I really lean on it - but things tend to go astray when I do that.) I would stick with what you have for now, and add the 3-Wood. First, it only requires buying 1 club instead of 2 (bad for the club ho in you; good for the wallet). Second, you can always buy a L-Wedge later and re-work your bag then. But right now, I think the 3-Wood would give you a lot more "bang for the buck" by giving options off the tee and in the fairway. But hey, that's just one guy's opinion. Hopefully others will chime in if they have a different opinion. Finally, if the PING wedges still have the serial number on them, you can just call or email PING and they can tell you what the original specs were. They keep a record of every club they build. Hope this helps!

If you like the wedges, then take out the 3 iron since you have the 19* hybrid. same thing...

The thing is I've been using the 3 iron off the tee on 190-200 yard par 3's which I actually hit the greens with. Off the fairway or rough I use the 3 hybrid. That's why I am so reluctant on giving up the 3 iron.

What is your distance with the 3 hybrid. When do you envision that you need it rather than the 3 iron?

I think you should ask yourself this...How many times have I hit my 3 iron so close to the hole that I made the next put? That is the only way to save a stroke anyway. Personally I would pull the 3 for the LW and maybe get your other wedge lofts checked to even those gaps. You could always bend the 4 a little strong if you see a large gap in the top of the set.

I firmly feel gap wedges (ie-50-51-52) are pointless. So my advice is to can your gap wedge. I go 3 wood, 2 iron, pw,54,60.

I don't feel 3 wedges PLUS a PW is needed.

No, but we're playing golf, and the game has rules.

I personally carry: Driver (1) 3W (1) Hybrid (1) 3-PW (8) 54 Wedge (1) 60 Wedge (1) Putter (1) That's 14 right there. My hybrid takes the place of a 5W and/or 2I. Most amateurs don't need more wedges - it tends to just confuse them. I don't have a gap over about five yards (and I grip down a little to adjust even those) with just three wedges.

I think I will move onto similar wedges like that. I've hit my 3 iron off the tee to birdie more than once so I really prefer it on those holes.

I carry personally on most days:

Driver (1)
3-wood (1)
2-PW(9)
SW (1)
LW (1)
Putter (1)

Right now my driver is on closet time and I'm pulling a Phil Mickelson but I yank the 2-iron and put in the 4th wedge from time to time as I have a 52 degree... if the course is shorter then I don't carry a driver...

I can tell you what the loft of your wedge is supposed to be:

the Eye2s (9/82-1/88) W (aka Pitching Wedge) 50.5, Sand wedge 57.5

now my question is are they the original model or the Eye2+ because the lofts are 48.5 and 53 if that is the case...

if you have eye2+ there is a + in the top part of the cavity on the toe side... let me know either way...

If you have the eye2+ you yank the it would be tougher... but if you have the eye2 it wouldn't be so hard... but the you will have a huge gap between the 43-degree 9-iron and the 50.5 degree wedge so it would be hard...

How many 190-200 yards Par 3 are there? Perhaps only 1? Compare it to how many par 5 there are in one round. IMO, 3-wood would be more useful.

If you insist on keeping the 3-iron and also wanting to bag the LW then my suggestion is to swap your hybrid 19* with 4-wood. I think you get best of both worlds with this setup.

Or you could go with iacas's setup having only 3 wedges (including PW) and add a 3-wood.

Hope it helps.

    • Yes, agree that there should be more TV coverage. I think the fact that they don't have the swing speed of their male counterparts makes it (slightly) more relatable, in that the rough is more of a penalty and the lack of distance means they are often pulling longer irons or lumber to get home on par fives. I think this season has been a bit tough on the LPGA to build much of a narrative with no one winning more than one tournament. And you could argue that they didn't really make hay with Nelly's run of wins, which should have been crowding out Caitlin Clark for female sports story of last year. One piece that they need to fix is the slow play - I would argue there is less player power compare to PGAT, so I don't understand why they aren't hitting the repeat offenders with stroke penalties. They have taken some strides in that respect this season, so let's hope Kessler continues the momentum.
    • Day 70 (10 Jul 25) - Weekly 9 hole round - changed up the clubs as I used the MaCGregor blades and Penna persimmons.  These clubs require focused contact - so it was a day of working on tempo and making consistent contact.  Overall it was a good session of working on these areas.
