Here's the question :

If the golf gods came to you and told you that you would shoot EVEN par every single time out on 18 but you would never shoot LOWER than par, EVER, in your ENTIRE life, would you take that?

Personally, i wouldn't. It would ruin the game and although i know i could win some tournaments where the weather is bad, it would be boring because i would always know what i was going to shoot. But, for the money (if you played in tournaments in severe wind or wet conditions lets say), you might be able to cash in.

I think no seems to be the only reasonable answer. Who would want to be "par" everytime you play? I know I sure wouldn't.

Hell yes, it will probably take me the rest of my life to get to 72. I'm at a high 80 to 90 flat right now. I have a lot of time to play now as a single guy and playing time is only going to drop from now until I retire in 40 years. But then again that one guy did go from 90's to scratch in 1 year so you never know.

Of course not. I would hate to go and play my favorite activity and know that everytime I do it the end result would always be par. Even if I start breaking the 70's it would not hurt to sometime shoot a humble-ing score like maybe a high 90's to even a 100, why? because if that happens it would give me a reason to get back to where I believe my average was. That is something for me to work on. If I shoot par all the time and knows that everytime I go out its going to be the same, it would be boring and I would just go paint my fense and watch it dry.

We don't need any stinking golf gods.

My ringer score at the club I belonged to for 17 years was 48.
That means (at one time or another) I birdied every hole, eagled six of them including 2 holes in one.
I know I can shoot par every time out. I just don't .

This game is addictive because of the intermittent reward aspect.
Read some B.F. Skinner or watch a friend with a gambling compulsion if you don't get that.

What would be the use in playing?

The challenge of golf and love of the game is what keeps me playing, not the destination.

I would want to be able to shoot under par at some point. There is not point in being an even par person. That would make it booring to play like that. Then it would be no point in practicing and trying to be better at something.

The real question here is if your answer would change if you always shot 6 birdies and 12 pars?

I would venture a guess that no one would change their mind. The par has nothing to do with it.

This question is basically asking if you would take a guaranteed outcome in a leisure activity over a self-determined one. It isn't a rational question.

Let's see.... I could win the US Open several times in my life, regularly finish in the top 10 at the other 3 majors, make millions in endorsements. Yeah....I could live with that and never shoot an under par round.

Just as a question for those who say no way. Do you really see yourselves as having a realistic chance at ever shooting under par? I don't have any such delusions about myself or my golf swing, so I'll take the easy money.

Under those circumstances, it's no longer a leisure time activity. I have other avocations that I could devote my leisure time to.

I wouldnt wanna do golf as a "hobby" as I do now, and have a number I would never get below.....but if I decided to turn pro, guarranteed par could win you a lot of majors!

How do any of you propose you'd make it into any of the majors if you can only ever shoot par?

If I took the offer, not only would I get bored with the game but the Golf Gods would lose their favorite target for all their rage and anger. That would never happen because the Golf Gods appear to get too much amusement from my horrible game.

I would have to say, "no". Part of the thrill of golf for me is knowing that no matter how good I get, I could always be better.
If I knew that I was always going to make par no matter what, I think it would take a lot of the fun out of the game.

It's called "Sectional Qualifying" for the US Open. Join the PGA of America and play the qualifiers for the PGA Championship. If you do well enough in either of those majors, you'll get the invite to the Masters. Believe me, if you shoot every round at par, no matter what the course, you'll get by just fine.
