I'm asking 'Santa' for a new set of wedges this year. I REALLY dig the Titleist Vokeys, but want to understand better what the different 'bounce' settings are about.

I'm a high-handicapper in Ohio, so I don't get to play year round. My plan is the spend the winter at the indoor golf-dome working on my short game.

I'll be replacing the Callaway X-18 wedges I have now. (P,A,S,L) I'm thinking I'll get a 48, 52, 56, 60, in Oil Can, but that's about as far as I can take it on my own.

Can I get some suggestions on the bounce I should be going for? I'm also clueless on the differences between the model numbers.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well nearly everyone on the TST Staff uses Vokey wedges. Here's a review that Erik did on the Vokey Spin Milled wedges and here's a link to Titleist wedges that describe all their wedges and bounces.

Here's a short article that may help

Understanding "Bounce" by Tom Berry

Bounce or 'bounce angle' is defined as the angle the sole of your wedge creates when compared to the ground. Bounce is a specification usually only referred to when describing wedges. We list the bounce for all of our wedges in the technical specifications box on our individual product pages. What does this mean for your game?
It sounds slightly confusing, but grab a club and put in the address position and you will see the space between the ground and the leading edge of the wedge. It is small, but the bounce angle determines how much space there is. Wedges with very little bounce or a smaller bounce angle are usually designed for approach shots from short grass and tight lies. The smaller angle allows you to get under the ball easier. It is common for sand wedges to have the highest degree of bounce, so the wedge does not dig into the sand but it glides through while displacing the sand. Bounce can play a large part in the performance of the wedge, and is usually based on a golfer's needs and personal preference. To help you determine what wedge is best for you, decide on what degree of bounce will fit your game and course that you are regularly playing.

I bought the Oil Cans on my own without the help of a sponsorship. But, I'm always open to discounts or free stuff.

I bought mine before I joined TST but like anyone I'd welcome free or discounted stuff. I may try the Mizuno or Ping Tour wedges next season

I bought my 52 from a friend and got the 58 from 2nd swing golf at a

really good price. I had Clevelands before but found the Vokeys to be a bit more consistent. I wouldn't sacrifice my game to hit something to 'promote' it. I've had my 3-wood for about 5 years now and don't see a need to replace it. The same with my irons...

Fairways and Greens.

Some of the staff has some free clubs, sure. But I'd be playing my current set of clubs regardless of who was paying for what... and I think you may see that proven in the next month or so...

Doug, did we answer your questions?

    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
